Is there ever to much privacy??

In this "new world" you do see a lot of privacy, people are all way on there cell phones, or talking out loud to there friends or peers, or even over computer there is still no privacy because people are looking over your shoulder reading what your writing.

In 1984 there is not such thing as privacy because if you do something that makes it look like you have indepent thought or if you make a face crime you are killed.

If God knows, why not others too?

Many people have their own privacy. Either it is at home, work , or even with our phones. But why hide our things? It all depends on what kind of things they are. For instance Winston wants to keep in private about him and Julia. Also his diary. But the biggest thing that he dont really care about is drinking. If we see that nowadays, we will think he is alcoholic person. In 1984 they want them to forget everything. "He would have been incapable of speaking" (pg. 130). Even though we cant hide our things, we cant even have our privacy by talking out our stuff.

they could spy on you day and night

one place where we can have privacy is in our own home. In our own home no one is watching us, no one can tell us what to do, we have our own space to think and do pretty much what ever we want. When we are out in the street or any public place we are always being watched on what we are doing and for the police to make sure we are not committing any crimes. Just like in the book how they have telescreens in the streets watching the party members watching them that they dont commit any face crimes or thought crimes. The party member are always being watched and always being listened to their conversations. " He thought of the telescreens with its never sleeping ear. They could spy on you day and night,"(pg138). It is necessary to have to privacy because its a way to rest from the hectic world mentally and physically. One way that the government invades our privacy is when we use or phones and we say certain words that makes them start listening to our conversations. I understand that is for the safety of the people bu it is still invading privacy.

what would your reaction be if the police would be able to listen to our conversations when we were out in public places?
what if they told you what you could and couldnt do at home?

Privacy???

Cell phones(texting) and emails to me seem to be the most private you will get from anything or anyone. Texting is great for people to have private chats to each other you can say what you want most of the time. Our Privacy is most invaded by the government, or anyone when they think you are a threat against them or you will harm other people.

1984 Blog Post #2: Privacy

Either before or after writing your post, publish two comments on any classmates' blog posts on 1984 thus far. Be sure to include your initials in each comment so I know it was written by you. Comments should be 1-2 sentence detailed opinions (not simply 'good post' or 'I agree').

For your second blog post on 1984, focus on the theme of privacy. Offer two examples from our modern world that link back to the topic at hand: 1) how do we/you retain privacy in today's hyper-surveilled world and why is it a necessity? and 2) when/where is our/your right to privacy most significantly invaded by the government, the media, and/or other organizations?

In your post, as you answer these questions, also include a connection back to the characters/events of 1984 with a quote (and page number in parentheses). Consider what is different/similar between the real world and what Orwell predicted a future without privacy might look like. Finally, be sure to end your post with 2 open-ended questions regarding what you wrote about for classmates to answer. BONUS points if you use a vocab word from the first half of the book in your post. Must be bolded to catch my attention and earn extra credit.

Don't forget to put your initials in the 'Labels' section of your post before you publish it!

Lets Get Fu**ed Up!!!

I would have to say that there is not much difference between winston and people that use drugs. For start in the time period that Winston is living any type of free thinking is looked down apon, its also punishable. This is just like doing drugs, people do it but its looked down on by many people, and like in Winstons case it could lead to possible punishment. Also Winston seems to get a rush or a good feeling from doing what he want. Once again this is like using drugs.

The temptations of video games

Have you ever played a video games for only one match or game?? I know I have not only played one or two games, because once you stat to play you don't just play one game after the first game you want to play another and another. When playing video games you want to win and if you have a losing streak you wont get off until you get that win or a better winning streak then your losing streak.
In the book Winston is temperated with a lot of stuff but I'm going to talk about when he starts the diary. The reason i picked that one because it is like the video games but when he started witting he did not want to stop it was like the words just keeped flowing off his pen into the diary with out him even thinking about it. (19)" his eyes refocused on the page. he discovered that while he sat helplessly musing he had also been writing as though by automatic action."

music

"She knew the whole driveling song by heart, it seemed. Her voice floated upward with the sweet summer air, very tuneful, charged with a sort of happy melancholy." pg 117

One temptation that people give in too would be music. Like when we have problems or stressed out about something or just simply to get away from the regular day. We give into it because its something that we dont listen to everyday all day and there is always new things to listen to and all types of different genres of music so its not always the same. Its a way to break away from the regular everyday routine. Its also a way to express feeling wether we are making music, listening to it, or singing it . People can relate to it or find inspiration to do something. Its a temptation that we fall for very easily.

what do you do to escape everyday life?

whats one tempetation you fall for very easily?

drinking

Well I experience this temptation because I try to get away with my problems. Also to have some fun. Drinking makes me more fun, excited, and less mad about my problems. I really think people do this because there in a bad mood or need alcohol to get more punked up. And also when you're with friends they peer pressure you to drink.

quote: pg.8
The next moment , however, the burning in his belly died down and the world began to look more cheerful.
1. Why do u think they give out Gin??And what class of people give them the Gin??
2. Why do the proles drink?

JKL

Legal or Ilegal

Alot of people are tempted to have things that they cant have and the want it so bad that it makes them do Illegal things to get it. It tempts them to steal what they want. Winstin doesnt steal but he does things that he know isnt legal. he knows the big brothers would never approve of him doing like have a dairy and thinking his on thoughts where to he thinks the thought police are gonna catch him sooner or later for having his own mind. "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER"(page 19) Winstins rights that all the time knowing that if he gets caught he could be in trouble with the government, with big brothers his not allowed to think his own thoughts to speak his mind and yet he has a dairy.

If you were Winstin would you go against the government ?
Do you think Winstin is going to get caught with his dairy ?

Cell phones

Cell phones in school is a big temptation for kids now days. We can't stop playing with them or texting when were in class. I think we do it so much because we see it being done so much on t.v. We dont like to stop because we always want to know what someone has texted back or what there doing or were there at.

In the book Winston is starting to write in a diary to let out his feelings. He's writting in it cause he knows nobody will never see it but deep down he does want people to see it so they'll know how he really feels inside.

temptations

in the book i would say the temptations that relate from today and in 1984 is drinking because alot of people now a days drink as much as back then. in the book it seems like alot of the people in the book drink alot of gin and drinking also leads into other temptations like other drugs or breaking the law." some could even be purchased for a bottle of gin" pg.57

do you think drinking is a problem in both situations?

dont you think drinking would make the people in the book want to rebel agiants the goverment more then if sober?

SEX!

"Its real, undeclared purpose was to remove all pleasure from the sexual act." (pg 57) This quote explains one of Big Brother's goals. This quote has to do with teenage temptation because a lot of us are peer pressured into having sex. For instance, if a guy is a virgin by the time he's graduated high school, his peers are going to make fun of him for his celibacy. Also a couple might really like eachother and feel that they are ready, so that could be another way its a temptation. Also, there's the whole monkey- see monkey-do idea. Teenagers might think its cool or a good idea because others are. Finally, sex is tempting because its in our natural instincts.

Do you think that teenagers are tempted to having sex?

Do you think that sex might strengthen some teenager's relationships?

Video Games

Video games it a type of a temptation because once you start and you start realizing your having fun you don't want to stop playing and then the hours go by soon enough its 12 o'clock at night and you have school the next day and need to be up at 7 in the morning."Winston stopped writing, partly because he was suffering from cramp. He did not know what had made him pour out this stream of Rubbish. but the curious thing was that while he was doing so a totally different memory had clarified itself in his mind."(page 12) Winston stop writing only because he had a cramp in his hand and once he started feeling better about this stuff coming off his mind he wanted to keep going and not stopping.

Why hide it through drugs/alcohol?

Many people tries to escape from problems that they might have in a house, school, work, or even with a boyfriend/girlfriend. Like in general everybody gets into drugs. Many people tries to get rid off that problems that sorrounded us. But the drugs all what it does is kill us in the inside. "The gin was served out to them in handleless china mugs," (pg 44). People nowadays sees it as a habit or just because of peer pressure. In 1984, the government tries and erase their memories or how they felt in the inside by giving them a cup of gin during lunch. Why many people dont just face their own problems and leave all the drugs aside.

The temtations of video games

Have you ever played a video games for only one match or game?? I know I have not only played one or two games, because once you stat to play you don't just play one game after the first game you want to play another and another. When playing video games you want to win and if you have a losing streak you wont get off until you get that win or a better winning streak then your losing streak.

1984: Blog Post #1

For your first blog post on the novel 1984, consider the theme of temptation. Because Winston lives in a world controlled completely by an oppressive government, he is often going to be tempted to break rules, norms, and laws. But why? And how are people tempted nowadays? And why do we experience temptation? We don't live in a world like Oceania, do we? Choose something that you think is a common temptation in our society as your topic (and title of your blog post) and write a paragraph comparing that temptation to what Winston experiences in 1984.

*A strong paragraph is typically 4-6 sentences and should include specifics and detail.
*Make sure to start off your blog entry with a quote (with page number in parentheses)!
*Include a picture related to your topic of temptation - ask me if you don't know how.
*At the end of your post, ask two open-ended questions about your topic and/or anything from the book that you may have mentioned in your post.
*Put your initials in the "Labels" section of your post so I know you wrote it!
