THE STORY OF THE PRIEST IN THE MESSAGER

They might wasn't in the play a lot but these two had some very important parts in this play. They were even close two Oedipus. The messager was close to Oedipus the most because he had a big decision in this play, should he give baby Oedipus away to someone that can't provide for him or should he give him to somebody that can take care of him. Ether way it go he have to get it away from the city. The messager had give the baby to a royal family not knowing that the baby will soon come back in be king from his home city.

Oedipus Review Questions!

1) What mountain does Oedipus both begin his life on and return to at the play's end?
2) On what mountain does Tiresias the prophet communicate with the gods?
3) What does the name 'Oedipus' translate to?
4) What does Oedipus use to blind himself at the play's end?
5) What is the name of the city that Oedipus was largely raised in?
6) What is the name of the city that the play took place in?
7) How did Oedipus first find out about the gods' prophecy?
8) How does Jocasta kill herself?
9) Why does Oedipus think Creon is conspiring against him?
10) What phrase makes Oedipus first think he might have killed Laius?
11) Which of Oedipus' daughters gets her own play written about her?
12) Who are the 'God' and 'Jesus' of the Greek gods?

Laius

My character is related to Oedipus by being his birth father. Laius and Jocasta gave up Oedipus at birth because they were " afraid of frightening prophecies". ( Shepherd ) His personality to me is just like Jocasta's. He's afraid of the truth and what might happen, so he tried to aviod it. Later in life though, Oedipus proves the prophecies right by killing Laius. Mistakingly though since he never knew who Laius was. Laius is related to Oedipus' tragedy by being the person that caused Oedipus a lot of pain and confusion. Also by being the person that he killed.

The Prophetic wisdom

Tiresias was the prophet that told oedipus that he was the curse of Thebes and that he murdered his own father. Oedipus was very hesatent of believing Tiresias but after jocasta told him about the three roads that met is where the king died everything started clicking in his head. the personality of Tiresias is kind of arrogant cause he thinks that he is kind of untouchable because he is a prophet and the gods will protect him. I think his important quote is "I say you are the murderer you hunt." cause it made oedipus think twice about himself. Tiresias was ivolved in the tragedy by opening oedipus's eyes by telling him he was the cause for this curse that took over Thebes.

Deception

In this blog im going to reveiw characters Jocasta and the shepard from the story "Oedipus the king" on how they were related or had any connection with Oedipus. Including information on thier personalilty and behavior, also if and how was the character involved in Oedipus tragedy. The first character im going to talk about is Jocasta the relationship Jocasta had with Oedipus was that she is his mother and wife also the mother of his children. Jocasta behavior throught the play was loving and motherly but toward the end of the play while everything negative was coming out of the closet she becomes distant and depressed. Just before Jocasta commits suicide she states a quote giving us her theory on man and wisdom "Not a man on Earth can see a day ahead, groping through the dark meaning no average man can see his destiny ahead of time. Jocasta had alot to do with the tragedy of Oedipus because she was the one to birth him then send him away then be so willing to marry the next king to come along not to long after her husband dies. The other charater that im going to talk about is the shepard he didnt have any relation to Oedipus. His personality from the begining was distant he mostly stayed in the mountains. Shepard had a big role in the tragedy cause the Shepard was the one the royal family gave the baby to when they wanted him to be excuted but instead of killing the baby he takes him to a far away town and gave it to a couple.

Polybus And Merope / Creon.

Merope and Polybus were the people that raised Oedipus from when he was a child. A Sheppard brought him to them, after a friend gave him baby Oedipus. They were very sympathetic, and you could tell because they took in a baby that wasn't their own. and raised him until he was a grown-up.

He's from Corinth, he's come to tell you your father is no more--Polybus-- he's dead!" Jocasta.

She was involved in Oedipus' tragedy because she took care of him his whole life, until Oedipus left because a prophet told him he would end up killing his own father. and he didn't want that to happen so he left to go to Thebes.

Creon.

Creon is Jocastas brother. He is pretty laid back with the situation thats going on with Oedipus. He really doesn't get into all the drama thats going on.

"The charge was made in public, wasn't it? I put the prophet up to spreading lies?"

Oedipus wants to vanish creon because he sent a prophet to him. But the prophet was telling the truth. but Oedipus was still upset with Creon, all because of his big EGO!!

the ghost of king hamlet

The Ghost is most identifed by the them death. The reason i pick death is because the ghost (King Hamlet) was killed by his brother. The only person that knows who killed him is his son hamlet. The whole story is trying to find out who killed the king.

One quote that prove this is "To revenage his foul and most unanatural murder"(1.5.33). This quote connects to death because he's telling his son that he should take his own brother's life because he took mine. He came up to him in a ghost form. This is important because the ghost (King Hamlet) dont want to see his brother in power for the wrong reason.

Another quote that prove this is "When i go sulf'rous and tormenting flames most render up myself"(1. . The quto is saying that he's time is comeing to return to the flames.Which meaning thathe is trap between heaven in hell, In the middle, and hasn't been chosen for one to go to this is related to death because he doesn't have a place to go. This is a powerful thing and i hope that he find his way throw.

Horatio at your service

Horatio is Hamlets stability in his broken family. With few words but calm presence he is able to understand and support Hamlet. Horatio is a loyal friend who tells Hamlets story. Horatio’s only family is Hamlet’s as far as we know. Horatio never speaks of his own family. Horatio is always there for Hamlet like his right hand man. He knows Hamlet’s family is broken, and all the corruption that is happening in it. Horatio understands all the pain Hamlet went through after his father’s death. I think Horatio must have had a broken family himself because he copes with Hamlet’s situation very well. “Here sweet lord, at your service.” (3.2.55) Horatio highly respects Hamlet, and Hamlet perceives how good a friend and servant Horatio is and feels like he can talk about anything with him. “Horatio, thou art e’en as just a man As e’er my conversation coped withal.” (3.3.46) Hamlet is telling Horatio that he is one that understands him. He can feel and know his conversation. Horatio speaks calmly and listens to Hamlets troubles of a broken family, he identifies with Hamlet’s feelings, that’s why I feel like Horatio has had a broken family himself.

Retribution

The theme for Rosecrantz and Guildenstern is revenge. The reason for this is the previous kings son Hamlet has set out for revenge for killing his father than marrying his mother shortly after. Claudius (present king) feeling suspicious of Hamlets behavior he sends two loyal peasants to spy on what Hamlet is doing in his spare time. The two peasants, not being to bright Hamlet soon figures out that they work for Claudius and Gertrude.

"But we both obey, and here give up ourselves in the full bent to lay our service freely at your feet, to be commanded." {2.2.31-34} In this brief quote Guildenstern is stating that he and his friend are willing to do anything for the king. Already giving up their sovereignty they are also willing to give up their freedom at no cost.

"we'll wait upon you". {2.2.286} Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are saying that they are willing to do anything for Hamlet without question. Now that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are around their old pal they fall under the pressure of Hamlets interigational friendship. Manipulating thier minds Rosencrantz and Guildenstern now want to quit working for the king and work for Hamlet. Hearing that, Hamlet doesn't want Rosencrantz nor Guildenstern to work for him he just wants them to be friends with him. Not wanting to disobey the King and Queens orders they don't tell them that they quit they just hang around with Hamlet then may report irrelevent matters

The shadow of death

King claudius most relates to the theme death, because he is the most related to death and deaths shadow is casted from prince hamlets plan of revenge.

"Though yet of hamlet our dear brothers death the memory be green." (1,2,1-2) says king claudius. the reason why he is saying this is because all the memories of his brother is of him being envious of what his older brother had. this is the new kings first line in the play and right away it tells us that he is or was jealous of his brother.

"madness in great ones must not go unwatched." (3,1,203) King claudius is saying this to hamlet but i think it could be fliped arond and turned on him. the king is the most important in the kingdom and he has already shown sighns of being crazy or mad by killing the old king just for his power. The whole play the king is forshadowing hamlet when he really is the one who is gone crazy and is carrying death on his shoulder.

Broken Family:Ophelia's Story

The theme Ophelia most relates to is "Broken Family."
One of the reasons she is in this category is because her father (Polonius) doesn't like her dating Prince Hamlet. Polonius doesn't want Ophelia to have babies with Hamlet.
Also, Ophelia's father works for the new King, Cladius, as his council and considering that Hamlet is her boyfriend, and that Hamlet has "problems" (to say the least) with King Cladius, makes for not only a "Broken Family," but a chaotic one at that.
"No, my good lord, but as you did command
I did repel his letters and denied
His access to me." (Ophelia 2.2 120-122)
From this quote you can tell that Ophelia is mad and a little sad over a certain event that occured, but what you didn't know is the event that occured was her boyfriend, Prince Hamlet, walked in on her sewing in her private room acting quite strange, he had a tight unfastened jacket, dirty stockings, and looked as if he just came from hell and back. Hamlet then grabbed Ophelia's wrist and held her hard, but not hurting her. Ophelia feels sad, mad, and confused about what just happened, not knowing that Hamlet had just talked to the ghost of his father, and that the ghost told him King Cladius had murdered his father just to take the title of King.
"For if the sun breed maggots in a dead dog, being a good kissing carrion-Have you a daughter?" (Hamlet 2.2 197-199)
Although in this quote Hamlet is refering to Ophelia, Hamlet is being sarcastic when he says this. Hamlet is talking to Polonius (Ophelia's father) and Hamlet doesn't like Polonius so he tries to get under his skin even if the words he says offends and disrespects the one he loves.

For The Honor Of The Dead King

First off prince Hamlet is the son of Queen Gertrude and the recently killed King Hamlet. As soon as prince Hamlet's father died his mother Gertrude married prince Hamlet's uncle also known as king Hamlets brother. This caused prince Hamlet to have a lot of resentment toward his mother and uncle (step father). As soon as prince Hamlet found out thru his father's ghost that his uncle had killed him he decided to revenge his father.

Second of all Hamlet decided to take actions with his own hands because he knew that if he didn't revenge his father no one was going to do it. "That I, the son of dear (father) murdered, prompted to my revenge by heaven and hell. (Act2.sc.2line612-613). The theme I have choosen is very important because it is a topic that is carried from the beggining to the end. Hamlet decides to carry it throughout because he wants to make justice to his father.

Third and lastly of all Hamlet hints his uncle thar he knows something about the murder "This play is the image of a murder done in Vienna". (pg151) This could give the king an idea of what Hamlet might want to do because Hamlet in the play basickly tells his whole plan not only to the king but to all the people that are there.

Lifes Struggle

In my opinion a life struggle that people go through in life is with finace issues. Making sure they can afford things and be happy at the same time. Like with Gregor there family had finical issues so he had to work very hard to get him and his family out of debt.

This struggle is mental, emotional and phyiscal because mentally all a person his thinking about is working making my family happy and doing my all so they can be happy. Emotionally there sad that there going through had times and its all on them to make it work and physically there probably tired and weak from doing so much work to bring money to the table so there family can eat and be happy.

Gregor experinced this struggle as a human. His familyhad finical issues so gregor had to work hard for his family so they can live better lives and be out of debt. Also being the only person in his family that could work or even wanted to work so all the pressure was on him.

To me gregors father experiences this struggle as will being the man of the house an not able to w0rk or wanting to knowning that there family is in debt and has to money to his son has to step up and help them out when it can be the both of them wroking together and would probably be way more easier oon gregor if his father was helping him, but when gregor turns into a cockroach then his father steps up and starts working.

Yes to me someone can survive this struggle by working hard for what they want an what they need. I think if a person doesn't like what they have then its only in there hands to fix it because nothing is handed to you. You always have to work for what you want.

desdemona

QUOTES:
1)Where should i lose (that)handkerchief, Emilia??pg.153 line 23

2)How now , good Cassio, what's the news with you???pg161 line 27

The reason why I chose quote 1 is because Desdemona is asking Emilia if she seen her handkerchief. But Emilia said no because she picked it up and toke it so she could give it to Iago. And that was wrong that she did that. I think that Emilia is too in love that she'll do anything for Iago and even if there wrong things!!!

THE REASON I CHOSE QUOTE 2 is because othello asked her where the handkerchief is and desdemona said its not lost but could be. And Othello ask her how... but othello knows that she doesnt have it and that Iago should him the handkerchief. So now othello feel like Iago could be right about the rumor of desdemona and cassio.

I really think that Iago is jealous of othello and that Iago is a bad man. He's trying to mess up people's lives and he should stay away. And i think that Iago could be gay and is jealous that othello chose cassio instead of him.Now othello is disappointed and doesnt trust desdemona. An d also desdemona has talked to cassio and that makes othello feel like she has done something with cassio. So pretty much othello is believing what iago is saying.

jkl

Emilia

"I nothing but to please his fantasy." act3 sc3 line 343. The quote stands out a lot because it pretty much describes what probably a lot of women were doing at this period of time which was just please their husbands in anyway that they could. This quote also says a lot about the character of Emilia. It seems like she just wants to make her husband happy in anyway possible that she can so he can treat her right and have respect for her. Also it pretty much says that she would do anything for him even if she got in trouble. Like stealing the handkerchief of Desdemona which she works for because Iago asked her to. She also lied to Desdemona telling her that she had not seen her handkerchief when she did. Thats what she has done so far, im pretty sure she will probably do more things for Iago in the rest of the book.

Iago

PG. 125"For Michael Cassio, I dare be sworn I think that he is honest." This quote shows how dishonest and deceitful Iago is, because really he doesn't like Iago or think he's honest at all. Translated this quote basically just means that Iago is trying to say that he believes that Michael Cassio is honest. Actually he has been setting Cassio up and got him drunk so he would get demoted from lieutenant. This quote stood out to me because it's one of the only quotes that I really understand fully. This quote might help me predict something Iago might do in the future because now that I know that he is willing to lie to Othello about Cassio maybe he'll lie about some other things too like Desdemona's hankerchief...

PG. 97"I had rather have this tongue cut from my mouth Than it should do offense to Michael Cassio." once again this quote connects to theme of deceit because he once again is lying about respecting Michael Cassio when really he would probably kill him if he wanted to. Translated the quote means that he would rather have his tongue cut off then to use it to talk bad about Cassio. This quote tells us something about Iago's personality, that he's a liar. This quote stood out to me because it also was one of the only texts I really could understand completely.

Othellos a beast

in the book othello he is married to a young girl name desdamona. every one dosnt really want them to get together so iago is trying as hard as he can to get them two to break up. othello is jealous of cassio beacuse he thinks that his wife has feelings for him witch pisses off othello. "if you fit or that it may be done give me advantages of some brief discourse with desdemon alone" pg.115

Othello

Othello is mad at Cassio because he is "hitting" on his wife but he is only trying to get his job back because he got drunk and got into that fight where hi stabed someone.
"I am bound to thee forever" Othello (pg.133) he is talking about how is is still in love with his wife but he is thinking about killing or leving her because he is thinking that she is cheating on him with cassio. " Villain, be sure thou prove my love a whore!" (pg.143) It is when he is talking to Igao about his wife and Cassio cheanting on him. With othello in act 3 it is all about trying to find out if hs wife is cheating on him.

Cassio

Throughout the play there is much deceiving from Iago. One example is how Iago tries to use Cassio to enrage Othello. "I humbly thank you for 't. I never knew a Florentine more kind and honest."(pg 113) This is a perfect example because really he is rarely honest, but he is deceiving Cassio and making him think that he is just trying to help.

Iago has also caused Cassio to become inebriated at the party even though he originally did not want to drink. "Not tonight, good Iago. I have very poor and unhappy brains for drinking. I could well wish courtesy would invent some other custom of entertainment."(pg 83) But very shortly after he tricks him to drink more, causing him to stab Montano. There is much deceit throughout the play and these are good examples.

Othello Blog Post #1: Jealousy & Deceit

Hey everyone -- while I'm at the doctor's, would you be so kind as to do this blog post assignment about Act 3 of Othello? No? Too bad; do it anyway. SERVED!

Anyway, here's what I'm looking for: pick a character in particular to blog about and write their name along with your initials up on the board. Only two people maximum per character please! Look for two quotes from your character (at least one in Act 3) that you think you can explain the importance of and translate. Make sure to put each quote in "quote marks" and include page numbers!

In your TWO paragraph-long explanations, try to make at least one connection to a theme in the play. The main themes so far are JEALOUSY (which we have talked about) and DECEIT (which means the act of deceiving, tricking, or manipulating). Every major character in this play suffers from both themes, so no excuses!

If you find yourself absolutely stuck, you can ask Ms. Schriver for the modernized version of Othello, but please do not hog it. Also, if you're stuck on what to write about, consider the following questions:

- Why does this quote stand out to you as a reader/listener?
- What does this quote tell us about the character's personality?
- How might this quote help you predict something that the character will do later in the play?

LASTLY! Do not forget to put your initials in the 'Labels' box of your post before you press 'Publish'!

Disability can be one life struggle.

Gregor is experiencing life struggle as cockroach. He tries to defend himself by not gettting hurt. Many humans beings try to be strong and not be weak. For an example the adults that are disabled from walking. Somehow they try to walk. They take classes to make their legs stronger. There are also people that are deaf and some that they cant talk. Everyone tries to fight for their own lives.

"Another following immediately landed right on his back and sank in,"(pg 1135). Gregor now that he has an apple on his back he is trying to be strong. But there are times he feels very slow and useful. He tried to help his sister when his mother faint away. But what happened? He got medicine all over his face. Gregor's dad also is experiencing life struggle in a different way. He didn't have a job before gregor became a cockroach. Now that gregor has become an insect he has one now but he has stress from working a lot.

Gregor might survive this struggle since now he became an insect. But if his family give him support to help him out. If his family don't give him love he won't survive and he would go away to another place.

Rouch Problems?

You can try and kill a rouch, but they always have a way of showing up. You can trow you best exterminators at them but they still will thrive. This is just like March Madness in college basketball. Instead of Rouches there are unerdog teams like Cornell. While major teams that came in thinking that they would knock off the little teams. But like every other year there is one team that takes on the best and defeats them.

In a way this also relates to Gregor. They both have in a way transformed, Gregor into a rouch, Cornell into an elite playoff monster. Gregor parents had plan in the begining to kill him, ans so did Wisconsin and Temple for Cornell. For now both are alive... But for how long

Money

A lot of people struggle to make enough money to support their household and provide food, shelter, and other things to themselves and possibly others.

1) It can be a huge emotional strain to work long hours of a job in order to make enough money, as well as physically exhausting because of the stress, perhaps lack of sleep, and even activities done in the work place.

2) As an insect, obviously he can't work a job. As a human he chose a travling job because it had a potential to make more money that he could use to pay off his family's debt.

3) His father had been providing money, but his business failed, and now the family has to rely mainly on Gregor to earn the income.

4) Yes, most people can, with hard work and some luck involved. If you get a job, and work enough hours, it will be easier. But if you can't find a job, for whatever reason, then money continues to be a big issue. You cant really survive in this world without money.

pg.1110 "Oh god, he thought, what an exhausting job I've picked on!"

money problems

I think that everyone goes through money struggles. Everybody at one point in life has to go through money problems wether its by not having enough or being in debt. This can affect people physically, emotionally, and physchologically. Physically because they could end up working more than their body can take and it ends up affecting their body by getting sick easier always being tired not eating right because they dont have enough time to rest or eat. Emotionally because they are always being worried about not having enough money and they start to always be in a bad mood or depressed. They could be Physchologically affected because they start to think that they are always going to have the money problems and they start being more worried and paranoid. Gregor expiriences this because his parents are in debt and he has been working to pay off that debt and because of that he has become a workaholic."Im loyally bound to serve the chief, you know that very well. Besides, I have to provide for my parents and my sister. Im in great difficulties,.." I think that his sister also expiriences a problem but hers is by being worried because she cant work and she has been watching her brother work a lot. I think people can survive this struggle if they had someone help them so that they dont go through it alone and all the weight doesnt fall on just on person. It would make it easier.

Debt

"The chief clerk must be detained, soothed, persuaded, and finally won over; the whole future of Gregor and his family depended on it!" (pg.1120) When he was a human and now as a cockroach Gregor still has to try and find a way to pay off this debt that has accumulated as a result of his father's business failing. His dad also shares this same debt because it was his business that failed, but in a different way because he's real lazy so he's not really doing anything about it. Being in debt can be physical because of the all the stress, or psychological or emotional because you might always think about it.
Most people will have to go through owing a debt. If its a minor debt or a huge one just about everybody will at some point be in debt. To get a car or a house you have to take out a loan, and that's debt. But other people might be big gamblers and get into debt that way. Someone might be able to get rid of their debt after a lot of work and saving money but it would be pretty hard depending on how much you owe

Braking Bad

Gregor's life struggles are kinda the same as Walter form the t.v. show Breaking bad on AMC ( Sundays at 9) i think there are the same because Gregor really has no life he works all day than comes home and either sleeps or does his fretwork, and Walter all he did before he found out that he got cancer he just worked and helped his wife and son. I think this quote is saying that Gregor wants to keep the human inside of him alive even though the bug is taking over his mind and body. " Since he really did not know what to save first, then on the wall opposite, which was already otherwise cleared, he was struck by the picture of the lady with the fur."
I think that someone can live through the struggle even if he does not change back in to a human. All he would have to do is live outside and have his sister bring him old nasty food that they were going to throw out any ways.

Metamorphosis Blog Post: Life's Struggle

For your one and only blog post on Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, consider the second theme of the novella: Life's Struggle. Choose a struggle in particular that you think most people experience in life, including Gregor, to discuss and describe/explain the following aspects of the struggle...

1) How is this struggle psychological, emotional, AND physical?

2) How does Gregor experience this life struggle in some shape or form, either when he was human or now, as a cockroach?

3) How does at least one other family member (sister Grete, mother, or father) experience this same life struggle, but maybe in a different way?

4) Can someone/Gregor survive this struggle? Explain how.

Don't forget to include a QUOTE with PAGE # from the novella (copies are available on the computer lab's middle table) to help support one of your points above!

Also don't forget to leave your INITIALS in the 'Labels' section before you publish your post!

EXTRA CREDIT: Connect your life struggle to somebody's 1984 post (scroll through past blog posts) and leave a comment (w/ your initials) explaining the connection!

Mahatma gandhi

Gandhi is a martyr because of his non-violent ways to get the British out of India and also how he made the Indian people follow him even when they wanted to kill them for what the British did to there home land.

I can't relate Gandhi and Winston but I can relate him to a guy Winston say on page (194) the guy who looked like a skull-faced man who was sent to room 101 and he tried to fight his was out by telling the guards about the guy who just got hit in the face.

Privacy Man.

Privacy is something that should be respected, its a sensitive subject. For me when I need some privacy I'll leave my apartment if my dad's there, maybe take a walk or something. I think it's important to get privacy because you need time to sort all your emotions and thoughts out, and you can't do that as easily with a bunch of people around you. Try to think of inexorably being watched all day, you would start to go insane. Now a days there's an impedimenta of places where you're being surveilled. Gas stations, work places, streets, now even your PHONE CALLS can be listened to and recorded. There are probably even some pneumatic types of surveillance cameras that are used these days. Most often though I would say that our privacy is interrupted when phone calls are listened to.

Do YOU Believe that some privacies might need to be abolished in order to live in a more safe society?
What do you think is the most significantly invaded type of privacy?

Hitler and Big Brother the same?

One of the most famous Matyrs of all time would have to be Hitler. While his cause was not the best, he stuck to his beliefs until death. It was death of big brother, the book was sort of wrote after Hitler. If you looked at the way the countrys where run they were very simiular. They both had the main goal of world domination. They were both power hungry. If anyone got in the way they were taken out. They had a group of people that were oppresed (peroles and jewish).

What happens to you, is forever...

A martyr is when somebody dies believing their own beliefs. Winston is one of them because at the very beginning of the book he hated Big Brother in 1984. At the end he died loving Big Brother. Many people dies for many reasons or a cause. Winston wanted to die hating Big Brother but when O'Brien wanted him to feel the fear that's when he took him to room 101. "What happens to you here is forever," (pg.239). Winston become so scared and the only thing he loved was Julia. The last person he really loved was her. O'Brien had accomplished what he really wanted. That's when they let him out in the community. There are things ,your own acts, from which you could not recover.

Jesus is one of the people that dies for a good cause. He die sacrifing himself for us. Many people thinks that his death paid for our sins. Many thinks he was an evil person. When Jesus actually died he torn into two pieces the temple of roman from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks were split, ant the tombs were opened. That's when christians believe he was son of god.

rosa parks

I think maybe he decided to end the book that way to explain that you can only do so much before your time is up. To not waste time to be quick on things. Like winston when he finally thought he had the chance to do something they caught him and Julia. They could have done something against big brother but they didnt have the chance. He could have done something small with a big impact. Like Rosa Parks, she fought for what she thought was right. She refused to sit in the back of the bus. She had the right to sit anywhere she wanted she paid like everybody else did. It wasnt the biggest thing ever but it helped against racial segregation and that action started the montgomery bus boycott . If she wouldnt of have refused to move i think that maybe it would of had taken longer for everyone to be treated equally or maybe it would of never happened.

http://www.achievement.org/autodoc/page/par0bio-1

winston fell apart

In the book 1984 winston got cought for acting agiants big brother. they beat him up starved him and played mind games with him but all that stuff just didnt work on winston. so they finally brought him to room 101.

when they brought him to that room they somehow figured out his biggest fear witch happends to be big nasty mean rats. they were going to let the rats eat out his face after that he finally cracked and gave up the last of his independent thought witch was the love for his girlfriend juliea so he basicly said kill her not him so he ratted her out to save him self thats how big brother crushed him.

i think that its important that he wasnt the grat hero at the end beacuse like every book has that ending and the athour wanted to show every one that not everything has a happy ending in life.
"do it to julia ! do it to julia! not me julia! i dont care what you do to her. tear her face off strip her to the bones. not me! julia! not me!" pg. 236

Martin Luther King

While reading the book 1984 I was pretty interested, I wasn't as bored with this one as some of the other books we've read in class. The ending however was pretty disappointing. I was looking forward to Winston murdering some party members, or doing some pretty exciting stuff but unfortunately none of that happened. One of the reasons I think Orwell decided to do this is because most stories end off with a happy ending, the hero defeating the dragon or the prince saving the princess. Although I respect his choice of ending it the way he did, it was just really disappointing to see Winston die without even believing any of the things that he fought so hard to believe during the whole book. It might have been necessary for Orwell to end it that way though because that's maybe how he thought things were going to turn out. If he was writing the book as a sort of foreshadowing for what might happen to America, he's not going to make the end be all happy if he doesn't think ours will be happy either.

My understanding of a martyr is someone who's influence still influences after their death. For instance, Martin Luther King, one of the biggest civil rights leaders in history. If he hadn't died a martyr the world might not be the same place it is. A lot of people gained a lot of strength and hope through Martin Luther King and if he would have died believing that the world should be segregated people wouldn't have looked up to him the same. Another guy, Jesus. If he hadn't died a martyr we probably wouldn't have had a bunch of holy wars, deaths over religion, or Christianity at all

1984 Blog Post #3: Martyrdom (Last One!)

Either before or after you do your blog post, publish at least two detailed and insightful comments on classmates' blog posts. Answer a question that they ask or offer your opinion in response to theirs - don't forget to put your initials at the bottom of each comment!

For your final blog post on 1984, focus on the topic of martyrdom for 1-2 detailed paragraphs. Now that you've finished the book, consider why Orwell ended Winston's story on such a depressing anti-climactic note. Think about this in relation to a martyr from history that you do a little of research about online before you begin writing. Questions to possibly answer and other requirements for the blog post are below.
  • What does it mean to be a martyr? What clues before the book's ending made us think Winston might be one?
  • How did Big Brother still kill Winston without making him a martyr? Why was it important for Orwell to end the book this way?
  • What other martyrs have there been in history? Imagine/describe what the world might have been like if these figures hadn't died as martyrs. Imagine/describe what the world might have been like if these people hadn't been able to communicate their independent thought!
Other requirements for the blog post: 1) The title of the post should be the name of the martyr you researched, 2) Include a quote with page number when making a connection between your martyr and Winston, and 3) Include a link to a web site (NOT Wikipedia) where people can learn more information about the martyr you researched.

Is there ever to much privacy??

In this "new world" you do see a lot of privacy, people are all way on there cell phones, or talking out loud to there friends or peers, or even over computer there is still no privacy because people are looking over your shoulder reading what your writing.

In 1984 there is not such thing as privacy because if you do something that makes it look like you have indepent thought or if you make a face crime you are killed.

If God knows, why not others too?

Many people have their own privacy. Either it is at home, work , or even with our phones. But why hide our things? It all depends on what kind of things they are. For instance Winston wants to keep in private about him and Julia. Also his diary. But the biggest thing that he dont really care about is drinking. If we see that nowadays, we will think he is alcoholic person. In 1984 they want them to forget everything. "He would have been incapable of speaking" (pg. 130). Even though we cant hide our things, we cant even have our privacy by talking out our stuff.

they could spy on you day and night

one place where we can have privacy is in our own home. In our own home no one is watching us, no one can tell us what to do, we have our own space to think and do pretty much what ever we want. When we are out in the street or any public place we are always being watched on what we are doing and for the police to make sure we are not committing any crimes. Just like in the book how they have telescreens in the streets watching the party members watching them that they dont commit any face crimes or thought crimes. The party member are always being watched and always being listened to their conversations. " He thought of the telescreens with its never sleeping ear. They could spy on you day and night,"(pg138). It is necessary to have to privacy because its a way to rest from the hectic world mentally and physically. One way that the government invades our privacy is when we use or phones and we say certain words that makes them start listening to our conversations. I understand that is for the safety of the people bu it is still invading privacy.

what would your reaction be if the police would be able to listen to our conversations when we were out in public places?
what if they told you what you could and couldnt do at home?

Privacy???

Cell phones(texting) and emails to me seem to be the most private you will get from anything or anyone. Texting is great for people to have private chats to each other you can say what you want most of the time. Our Privacy is most invaded by the government, or anyone when they think you are a threat against them or you will harm other people.

1984 Blog Post #2: Privacy

Either before or after writing your post, publish two comments on any classmates' blog posts on 1984 thus far. Be sure to include your initials in each comment so I know it was written by you. Comments should be 1-2 sentence detailed opinions (not simply 'good post' or 'I agree').

For your second blog post on 1984, focus on the theme of privacy. Offer two examples from our modern world that link back to the topic at hand: 1) how do we/you retain privacy in today's hyper-surveilled world and why is it a necessity? and 2) when/where is our/your right to privacy most significantly invaded by the government, the media, and/or other organizations?

In your post, as you answer these questions, also include a connection back to the characters/events of 1984 with a quote (and page number in parentheses). Consider what is different/similar between the real world and what Orwell predicted a future without privacy might look like. Finally, be sure to end your post with 2 open-ended questions regarding what you wrote about for classmates to answer. BONUS points if you use a vocab word from the first half of the book in your post. Must be bolded to catch my attention and earn extra credit.

Don't forget to put your initials in the 'Labels' section of your post before you publish it!

Lets Get Fu**ed Up!!!

I would have to say that there is not much difference between winston and people that use drugs. For start in the time period that Winston is living any type of free thinking is looked down apon, its also punishable. This is just like doing drugs, people do it but its looked down on by many people, and like in Winstons case it could lead to possible punishment. Also Winston seems to get a rush or a good feeling from doing what he want. Once again this is like using drugs.

The temptations of video games

Have you ever played a video games for only one match or game?? I know I have not only played one or two games, because once you stat to play you don't just play one game after the first game you want to play another and another. When playing video games you want to win and if you have a losing streak you wont get off until you get that win or a better winning streak then your losing streak.
In the book Winston is temperated with a lot of stuff but I'm going to talk about when he starts the diary. The reason i picked that one because it is like the video games but when he started witting he did not want to stop it was like the words just keeped flowing off his pen into the diary with out him even thinking about it. (19)" his eyes refocused on the page. he discovered that while he sat helplessly musing he had also been writing as though by automatic action."

music

"She knew the whole driveling song by heart, it seemed. Her voice floated upward with the sweet summer air, very tuneful, charged with a sort of happy melancholy." pg 117

One temptation that people give in too would be music. Like when we have problems or stressed out about something or just simply to get away from the regular day. We give into it because its something that we dont listen to everyday all day and there is always new things to listen to and all types of different genres of music so its not always the same. Its a way to break away from the regular everyday routine. Its also a way to express feeling wether we are making music, listening to it, or singing it . People can relate to it or find inspiration to do something. Its a temptation that we fall for very easily.

what do you do to escape everyday life?

whats one tempetation you fall for very easily?

drinking

Well I experience this temptation because I try to get away with my problems. Also to have some fun. Drinking makes me more fun, excited, and less mad about my problems. I really think people do this because there in a bad mood or need alcohol to get more punked up. And also when you're with friends they peer pressure you to drink.

quote: pg.8
The next moment , however, the burning in his belly died down and the world began to look more cheerful.
1. Why do u think they give out Gin??And what class of people give them the Gin??
2. Why do the proles drink?

JKL

Legal or Ilegal

Alot of people are tempted to have things that they cant have and the want it so bad that it makes them do Illegal things to get it. It tempts them to steal what they want. Winstin doesnt steal but he does things that he know isnt legal. he knows the big brothers would never approve of him doing like have a dairy and thinking his on thoughts where to he thinks the thought police are gonna catch him sooner or later for having his own mind. "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER"(page 19) Winstins rights that all the time knowing that if he gets caught he could be in trouble with the government, with big brothers his not allowed to think his own thoughts to speak his mind and yet he has a dairy.

If you were Winstin would you go against the government ?
Do you think Winstin is going to get caught with his dairy ?

Cell phones

Cell phones in school is a big temptation for kids now days. We can't stop playing with them or texting when were in class. I think we do it so much because we see it being done so much on t.v. We dont like to stop because we always want to know what someone has texted back or what there doing or were there at.

In the book Winston is starting to write in a diary to let out his feelings. He's writting in it cause he knows nobody will never see it but deep down he does want people to see it so they'll know how he really feels inside.

temptations

in the book i would say the temptations that relate from today and in 1984 is drinking because alot of people now a days drink as much as back then. in the book it seems like alot of the people in the book drink alot of gin and drinking also leads into other temptations like other drugs or breaking the law." some could even be purchased for a bottle of gin" pg.57

do you think drinking is a problem in both situations?

dont you think drinking would make the people in the book want to rebel agiants the goverment more then if sober?

SEX!

"Its real, undeclared purpose was to remove all pleasure from the sexual act." (pg 57) This quote explains one of Big Brother's goals. This quote has to do with teenage temptation because a lot of us are peer pressured into having sex. For instance, if a guy is a virgin by the time he's graduated high school, his peers are going to make fun of him for his celibacy. Also a couple might really like eachother and feel that they are ready, so that could be another way its a temptation. Also, there's the whole monkey- see monkey-do idea. Teenagers might think its cool or a good idea because others are. Finally, sex is tempting because its in our natural instincts.

Do you think that teenagers are tempted to having sex?

Do you think that sex might strengthen some teenager's relationships?

Video Games

Video games it a type of a temptation because once you start and you start realizing your having fun you don't want to stop playing and then the hours go by soon enough its 12 o'clock at night and you have school the next day and need to be up at 7 in the morning."Winston stopped writing, partly because he was suffering from cramp. He did not know what had made him pour out this stream of Rubbish. but the curious thing was that while he was doing so a totally different memory had clarified itself in his mind."(page 12) Winston stop writing only because he had a cramp in his hand and once he started feeling better about this stuff coming off his mind he wanted to keep going and not stopping.

Why hide it through drugs/alcohol?

Many people tries to escape from problems that they might have in a house, school, work, or even with a boyfriend/girlfriend. Like in general everybody gets into drugs. Many people tries to get rid off that problems that sorrounded us. But the drugs all what it does is kill us in the inside. "The gin was served out to them in handleless china mugs," (pg 44). People nowadays sees it as a habit or just because of peer pressure. In 1984, the government tries and erase their memories or how they felt in the inside by giving them a cup of gin during lunch. Why many people dont just face their own problems and leave all the drugs aside.

The temtations of video games

Have you ever played a video games for only one match or game?? I know I have not only played one or two games, because once you stat to play you don't just play one game after the first game you want to play another and another. When playing video games you want to win and if you have a losing streak you wont get off until you get that win or a better winning streak then your losing streak.

1984: Blog Post #1

For your first blog post on the novel 1984, consider the theme of temptation. Because Winston lives in a world controlled completely by an oppressive government, he is often going to be tempted to break rules, norms, and laws. But why? And how are people tempted nowadays? And why do we experience temptation? We don't live in a world like Oceania, do we? Choose something that you think is a common temptation in our society as your topic (and title of your blog post) and write a paragraph comparing that temptation to what Winston experiences in 1984.

*A strong paragraph is typically 4-6 sentences and should include specifics and detail.
*Make sure to start off your blog entry with a quote (with page number in parentheses)!
*Include a picture related to your topic of temptation - ask me if you don't know how.
*At the end of your post, ask two open-ended questions about your topic and/or anything from the book that you may have mentioned in your post.
*Put your initials in the "Labels" section of your post so I know you wrote it!
