The Duke

The quote; To mourn a mischief that is past and gone Is the next day to draw more mischief on.
(pg.43)
This quote gives us a insight upon what the duke, brabantio and othello is talking about and if you brake it down the duke is saying that it is misfortunate that desdemona doesn't want othello but in the future their will always be someone else that you can find and that if desdemona doesn't want you so be it because you can't really make her be with you because if you really love her you will let her be happy but othello isn't understanding it.
This quote can be connected to alot of things because it's basically just saying that a person or thing can choose what they want and if you really care for it you will let it do what they think it's best because if you don't you are just holding them back and they will never be happy.
vocab word; beguiled: to influence by trickery, flattery, etc.; mislead; delude.
open-ended-questions: why in the book they treat women as if they are property? As if women back then didn't have a say in what they wanted.
would you ever fight for someone to be with you? why or why not? why do you think othello wants desdemona so bad? explain your answer.

Act 1, Scene 2, Othello

"my parts, my title, and my perfect soul shall manifest me rightly." (p.23) this said after Iago tells him that the Duke wants to talk to him about Barbantio's daughter Desamona and there so called "theft" of a marriage. this shows that Othello saw this confrontation coming and already knew that his name alone should clear some of the problems that her father may have with him. Othello sees situations coming, analyses it and solves it accordingly. Just like the war which he plays a big part in and with his marriage which was unapproved of. This is directly connected to power because he is saying that his name in the military will out pass and accusations he can throw at him, Othello knows he didn't do a damn thing wrong so he has no fear.

scurvy: insulting

how doesn't Othello ask how Barbantio found out about the marriage?

what brought Othello to marry right before he started a war?

Act 1, Scene 1, Brabantio

"O TREASON OF THE BLOOD! FATHERS, FROM HENCE TRUST NOT YOUR DAUGHTERS' MINDS BY WHAT YOU SEE THEM ACT." (p.19)

Brabantio is hurt that his daughter, Desdomona, has betrayed his trust. The quote shows us a power stuggle between father and daughter. The Dad still wants to make decisions for his daughter and wants to be in control of her life.

Treason of the blood= betrayl of her father/family

What does Brabantio want to do with Othello if he could?

What could have Desdamona done differently to not make her father feel betrayed but still end up marrying Othello?

Act 1, Scene 3, Desdamona

"And so much duty as my mother Showed
To you, preferring you before her father,
So much I challenge that I may profess
Due to the Moor my lord." pg. 41
When Brabantio calls in Desdemona to find out if Othello has "stolen" her or not. Desdemona states that she is in love with Othello. She says that she is grateful for all her father has done for her. But like her mother choose Brabanito over her fathers wishes, she will do the same.
This quote connects to love. Desdemona has such a true and unbreakable love for Othello that she would go against her own fathers wishes. One of Shakespeare's other play with a big theme like this is Romeo and Juliet. So this can only end in tragedy
prosperous: Success and well-being when it comes to money.
Do you think Brabantio is okay with Desdemona and Othello's marriage (explain why or why not)?
Desdemona and Othello's love is holding up now. But what do you think will happen later?

act.1 sc.1 iago

"an old black ram is tupping your white ewe" -page 13
-he is mad, so he going to tell the senator that his daughter is messing with Othello. He is mad at Othello for not apointing him as his lieutenant.
- it show his jealousy/hatered
-TUPPING:copulating with [[used, as here, in reference to sheep]]
-why is so jealous of othello eloping with brabantio daughter?
-why wasnt he appointed to be othello lieutenant?

Act 1, Scene 2, Iago

-"Though in the trade of war I have slain men,
Yet do I hold it very stuff o' th' conscience
To do no contrived murder. I lack iniquity
(Sometimes) to do me service. Nine or ten times
I had thought t' have yerked him here under the
ribs." (Iago, p.21)

-This quote gives insight into Iago's character because it shows how decieving he is and how easily he can lie right to Othello's face. He is warning Othello about Brabantio's coming to fight him but Iago was the one who set Brabantio against Othello in the first place.

-This quote is connected to the theme of betrayl, which has been a very prominent theme in the play so far and I think one of the most important themes overall in this play.

-Iniquity: gross injustice; wickedness; a wicked act or thing; sin

-Question 1: Do you think Iago's karma will catch up with him at the end of play and he will be punished for all the evil things hes done?

Question 2: When do you think Othello will realize Iago is betraying him? Will it be too late by then?

Act 1, Scene 3, Iago

"...and I retell thee again and again, I hate the Moor. My cause is hearted; thine hath no less reason. Let us be conjunctive in our revenge against him". (pg 53)
- speaking to Roderigo

I feel this quote is important because it reveals Iago's hatred for Othello. Iago doesn't exactly explain why he hates Othello but expresses that he's been feelings this way for a while now. I think Iago feels more jealousy than actual hate. Othello is a black man who is the general of an Italian army, he's very smart and trusting, and has married the daughter of the Senator. Not only does Othello have almost a perfect life in Iago's eyes, I think Iago feels that he has cut him out of his life in a way just because he didn't make Iago lieutenant. When Othello made his decision about Cassio being second-in-command, Iago should've came to Othello as a man and spoke with him about his issue. Instead Iago chose to be deceiving and manipulative to everyone around him but what he doesn't know is that eventually it'll all blow up in his face because a person can never get their way acting as he does.

hearted ~ fixed in my heart

conjuctive ~ unite

If Iago is supposed to be Othellos "ancient" than why wasn't he picked to be his lieutenant?

What will make Iago realize that what he's doing is wrong?

L.J.B.

Act 1, Scene 3 Roderigo

"It is silliness to live, when to live is torment, and then have we a prescription to die when death is our physician." pg49
This quote gives insight on how Roderigo feels about Desdamona and how he really likes her and he is basically saying why live when he cant have Desdamona, he is depressed. He wants to be with her but she is married and he either wants her or he is going to kill himself Roderigo is obsessed with Desdamona. The quote is connected to the theme in a way of a big love triangle, someone is in love with someone else or there is more than one person in love with one person.
Incontinently-immediately
-why does Roderigo like Desdamona so much?
-How is Iago going to help Roderigo with his problem?

A.P

Act 1, Scene 2, Brabantio

"So opposite to marriage that she shunned The wealthy curled of our nation.." (pg.25, line 86)

This quote gives insight on Brabantio's feelings towards his daughter. It basically comes out and says that he is ashamed off his daughter for running off and marrying Othello, someone of differnet color. He speaks of how she let down the nation and how he is trying to pin all this conflict on.

This quote can be connected to a larger theme, because it has to do with racism. Even though Othello is of a differnt racial status than Desdamona he is a very well respected man of higher authority and Brabantio can not accept that at this point in time.

"That thou hast practiced on her with foul charms"
practiced on her- meaning -- tricked her.

Do you think that Brabantio will ever open up to accepting Desdamona's marriage?

Why do you think that Brabantio is trying to blame his daughter for the war?

" Act 1, Scene 1, Roderigo

  • "Thou toldst me thou didst hold him in thy hate."
  • Basically the quote is letting us know that Roderigo hates Othello because he gave Cassio the positon of a lieutenancy instead of Iago.
  • This quote can be connected to the theme "love" because the opposite of love is hate. Roderigo used to have love for Othello now he hates him. But, Why? I think he hates him because Roderigo and Iago are friends, so its kind of like a friendship thing. If someone does something to your closest friend you are not going to like them because of the fact your closer to your buddy than the other person.
  • Tush: An expression of impatience.
  • Why would Othello choose Cassio to be lieutant instead of Roderigo? Would Roderigo payback his revenge for what Othello had done to him?

Pg.1143

A.
1.) What will it take for Gregor's dad to accept him as a bug? Even his family?
I think that his dad may not even accept him as a bug considering all the events that have occured during our readings. His Dad doesn't really know what to think and seems to be really ticked off by the fact that Gregor had transformed since he was their main support, like it was Gregor's fault. His Dad is pissed and stressed knowing that now he has to take care of the whole family when he is just not physically fit to do nor is the mother. His family may eventually accept him as a bug for his sister loves him and at first showed some love, until a couple days after she started giving up on him. His mother doesn't know what to think I believe she just can't understand.
2.) Does Greggor feel as though when/ or if he turns back into a human he will have to take care of his family again?
Yes, because although when he was a human and he took care of them bringing in all the income and working his hardest to make sure that his family could give back the money they were in debt for he did hate it at times, but it is his family and it was back in those days where childern helped support their families. Although the whole family helped each other. His family was different his mother has asthma and his Dad is just getting really old. As for his sister Gregor didn't want his sister to work, because he knew that she had so much going for her. When he transformed at first he was relived but after a while he sees how much not helping them affected his family. They started falling apart emotionally. Im sure that if he changes that he will go back to helping out his family.

The book turns out to be disapointing in the end. Gregor doesn't end up turning back into a bug and they decided to let Gregor's sister go off and get married so that she can come back and take care of them since Gregor can't. And Gregor becomes "flatened"

I believe that it is a disapointing ending. Gregor doesn't end up turning into a bug and his family just leaves in his room and he ends up dying of possible starvation. And instead of the father of the family can't even take resopsibility of the family on his own so he decides to have his daughter married of so that her husband can come and take care of them. Its just wrong how after all that their son has done for them they just leave him there even his sister. They just leave him there to die.

p.1134

Q: Why is Gregor not concerned about turning into a bug and instead is worrying about insinificant things like getting to work on time?
A:I think he is not concerned because he truly beileves he will change back. He is also more concerned about his parents. I think back in this time the commandment from the bible "honor thy mother and father" meant a lot. I think thats what he is trying to do. Even though they have money. He just wants to make them proud. He cares about his sister too. Gregor and his sister have a very strong bond and he wants her to go to college and have a great like. He thinks if he makes money he can make that life for me. indisposition: unwillingness

Q: How far of a transformation will he go through in becoming a bug?
A: I think Gregor will go as for as he needs to. I think the reason he is a bug because he feels that way. I think when he makes a move and trys instead of just sitting there he will figure things out. Its all about the symbols in the book. the bug he is represents the life he's lived. He's stuck. presentiment: the sense that something was about to occur.

Exisentialism: Trying to change.
I don't think you can ever change your whole self. You can change aspects of yourself but completely changing is impossible. I do think somethings need to change. Gregor its to change the way he thinks. He is a big because he was stuck in a life that wasn't really up to his standards and now he is literally stuck in his room. Its going to be hard for him to change. Its hard to change when you've been stuck in the same rut for so long. I don't think he will change if he does not make an effort.

p. 1127 - 1135

How is Gregor's transformation going to change his life with his family and chief?

Is he ever going to change back into a person?

lavishly: Characterized by or produced with extravagance and profusion

I think that his life will change completely around, him being a bug and not being able to work and make money to pay off his parents debt. This might make them get kicked out so then he would be a homeless giant bug which would not be any easier. He might change back into a person but he first has to find out how he changed in the begining, he probably has to go through a personal transformation with himself as a person for him to turn back. Today we talked about how Gregor is feeling now that the fact that he is a bug is sinking in. I think that he is sad that his mother can't stand the sight of him and he might possibly be one of the reasons her health is so bad. Also he knows he stills frightens his sister so that has to torment him seeing as how they used to be really close.

2. Obstinate- keeping to yourself to the point of stubbornness
3. Indispostion-minor illness
4. Lavishly- very freely and abundantly
5. Dunning- pestering for payment

Today in class we read about how Gregor's sister is basically concerned about him. She is the only one the is worried about him eating. Gregor is basically ashamd about what he looks like because he won't come from out under the bed. He doesn't want to have people see him the way he is because of how they acted in the first time they seen him. The cook quit because she is scared of Gregor or i guess she doesn't want to be around that type of problem.
There is nobody in the house who can keep there way of life a float without Gregor helping out. Gregor was the bread winning in the family and without him they have nothing they can't play the bills. Gregor is worried about the money in the house and the main person that he is worried about is his sisiter because she is still a kid. Gregor was trying to put her through school so she can live the life that she wants and play the violin all she wants.
