Honor, Love and Betrayal ( Hera, Paris and Helen)

Hera was the queen of the Gods and mt. olympus. She is the Goddess of love and marriage an weather. She is the wife of Zeus and bore his three children ares (God of war) , Hebe (Goddess of youth) and Hephaestus (smith God). She was also worshipped as the Roman goddess Juno, and the month of June (which is the most popular month for weddings) is named in her honor.
Her husband Zeus was very unfaithful not honoring his commitment to Hera when her agreed to mary her. Hera often took her anger out on Zeus's women instead of him.

Paris Son of Priam and Hecuba of Troy and brother of Hector. Paris and his brother had a great brotherhood until he was killed by Achilles. Hector protected his little brother and paris knew that "Do you love me, brother? Will you protect me from any enemy"?, he asked . Hecuba had a dream about the great trouble her unborn child would cause, so when Paris was born, instead of raising him, she ordered him exposed on Mt. Ida. Paris won" the love of Helen wife of Menelaus queen of troy. By giving the goddess aphrodite the title of the fairest Goddess in a contest against Athena and Hera . Whoever he thought was the most beautiful would receive a golden apple from him. He gave the apple to Aphrodite. In return she promised him she would make Helen of sparta fall in love with him. She was honorable to him and Helen somehow fell in love. Some say she fell in love with him on her on free will and followed him back to Troy others say, He kidnapped Helen of Greece which starts the Trojin war.

Helen She is the daughter of zeus and mortal mother Leda which makes her half god was known as " the most beautiful mortal" and even " the most beautiful woman in the world". She caught the eye of Paris prince of troy. And ended up leaving her husband for him. therefore she became helen of Troy. If she stayed loyal to her husband there would be no cause for the trojan war. Her husband felt betrayed and pissed. She broke the honor she made to him when they first married just like Zeus did to Hera and when that happens people end up getting hurt by the one scorned in this

Hermes, Patroclus, and Hecuba

Hermes is a god like figure. He was a great messager of the gods to the humans. He was compared to the Roman god Mercury. He was a patron of boundaries and of the travelers that crossed them. His symbols consist of the winged sandels and a winged hat. His honor shown through how he cares about the travelers and guides them.

Patroclus was a great young Greek. When he was young he accidently killed his bestfriend over a game of dice. Him and his father ran to excape revenge. They later went and meet Achillies. The two boys became best friends. When the Trojan War started Patroclus asked Achillies to don his armor for a battle and he succeeded and won the fight. He was a crazy man he did alot of things off the top of his head he never really thought about what he was gonna do.

Hecuba was the queen of Troy. She was the wife of King Priam. They had 19 kids together. She was a rather shy women who tended to her own buisness. She also went insane when she saw her kids Polydorus, and Polyxena corpses. She also led the women of Athena to a temple to pray. She had a ton of honor and pride in her family and she would do anything to have any of her kids back.

And when fortune overturned the pride
of the Trojans, who dared everything, so that
both the king and his kingdom were destroyed,
Poor wretched captured Hecuba,
after she saw her Polyxena dead
and found her Polydorus on the beach,
was driven mad by sorrow
and began barking like a dog...

The story of the Iliad is a wounderous story of two cities that was in contention over many different reasons such as Eris wasn't invited to a wedding so she snuck in Thetis and Peleus wedding and brought a golden apple. Creating an uprise in the wedding about the apple making everyone contraversal about the subject creating problems within the Wedding after the wedding the trojans and geeks contienuously kept the confrontation going making it bigger than what it really is.

In this story their are many different characters such as Apollo he is variously the god of light and sun, truth and prophecy medicine, healing, the pleague, music, poetry, art and more. Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto and has a twin sister and Artemis. Apollo also has a nickname which is phoebus In the story the Iliad Apollo play a big role in creating more confrontation by steping in the confict when a trojan preist daughter was abducted by a greek by sending a bow of pleague apon the city. He also intervened when Hector and Achillies were solving their conflict with violence by Choosing sides with Achillies and help him slay Hector. In the end Apollo does the right thing by protecting hectors body as Achillies rides through the city of Troy haleing Hectors body from him charriot.

Priam the king of Troy and the father of Hector and 50 other children was threatened by Achillies when he brought Hectors body back to Troy. Achillies forced Priam to give him a Ransom for Hectors body. When Priam realized that achillies was not fully human but half God he gave Achillies the ransom.

Achillies isn't just a normal human he's half god and half human because mortal named King Peleus had intercourse with goddess named thetis. Once Achillies Found out that he was half and half he felt as he was greater than other but achillies isn't the most inconciderate person ever because the war that he's in he's fighting for his wife. The reason Achillies had killed Hector was because he had killed Achilles best friend patroclius without reasonable doubt so Achilles kills Hector gruesomly then ties hectors body to his charriot and haled Hectors body around the city of Troy.

The Iliad

The god I have is Zeus and he is the ruler of all gods and everyone. some of the things he did was he put Hector and Achilles on the scales of fate. He sent a message to Achilles about Hector's body to prium. He is very selfish and didnt involve himself in the trojan war. Zues was not an honorable god he just seemed to care only about himself and he played his role only half and really didnt care for anyone else.

Calchas is a priest and a prophet and he asked why there was a plague that got sent down by Zeus. Calchas also determined that the war with Troy would last over ten years because he saw a blood-red snake eat eight baby sparrows and a mother and that symbolized that would stand for weakness. He was honorable because he could see that the snake ate the living and he had an idea that stood for weakness.

Chryses is a priest of Apollo whose daughter has been captured by the greeks and Chrysies is his daughter. He was honorable because his daughter got stolen and did not do things that he probley wanted to do but he held it back.

the honorable, greeks, gods and trojans.

Athena is the god of wisdom and a powerful defender in war and is a peacemaker. She is the daughter of Zues. In the story The Iliad she tries to convince Achillies not to fight. She dresses up as Hector's brother to talk to him, she is on Hector's side and protects him. One thing i learned from research was that Zues swallowed Athena's mother, Metis, while she was pregnant with Athena. Athena was born from Zues's forehead, fully armed. In The Iliad Athena does not show honor, but she made sure that Hector died with Honor.

Nestor is the king of Pylos and the oldest and widest Greek leader. He was trying to get peace between Achillies and Agamemnon. In The Iliad Nestor shows that he is powerful and he could take down Agamemnon if he wanted too. One thing i learned from research was that all of Nestor's brothers were murdered by Hercules and he escaped. In The Iliad Nestor shows honor by telling the warriors stories about when he was in the war, to help them fight honorably.

Hector is a Trojan, and Priam was his father. He was worried about dying in the war, he was telling his wife. Achilles killed Hector and brought his body back to the city. He dragged his body all over the city and around his best friend's grave, Protroclus for revenge. Zues protects Hector's body by bribing Achilles with a treasure. I learned from research that many poets described him as the son of god. Hector ties in with Honor because he fought with honor and when the god's got his body back he was buried with honor.

"Behold Hector now-if you ever once rejoiced

to see him striding home, home alive from battle!
He was the greatest joy of Troy and all our people!"

Iliad...those who are honored.

Agamemnon is a Greek in the book of The Iliad. He is like somewhat of the "Commander in Chief" of the the Acheans army in Troy. Agamemnon sends emissiaries to Achilles for some type of reconciliation, but Agamemnon is the one that stole Chryses' daughter. Eventually Achilles forgets about the fight with Agamemnon and they are reconciled. I learneed that Agamemnon was married to Clytemnestra and had several kids with her. Agamemnon links to the theme of honor because he was the leader of the Acheans Army.

Aphrodite is a God in the book of The Iliad. She is the the Goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. She is the daughter of Zeus. She protected the ones she gave beauty to. Cassandra resembles Aphrodite, and she announces hectors arrival. Paris was asked to determine who was more beautiful out of Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena; Paris chose Aphrodite. Aphrodite relates to the theme of honor because she is worshipped and known for being the most beautiful thing pretty much. She is honored as being the most beautiful God.

Andromache is a Trojan in the book of The Iliad. She is Hectors wife. Andromache was born in the city of Cicilian Thebe, and the city's name means "battle of a man". Her husband Hector was killed by Achilles in the Trojan War. Andromache relates to the theme of honor because she was Hectors wife and Hector was killed by Achilles.

The Iliad Blog Post

For your blog post on The Iliad, write three paragraphs: one on each of your characters that you were responsible for following throughout the story (a god, a Greek, and a Trojan). For each paragraph, 1) offer a general description using your notes, 2) something new learned about the mythological figure from online research, and 3) how they relate/connect to the theme of honor in the epic poem. In the second requirement, make sure to link to where you learned that information. Also, at some point in your post, include an important quote (found in The Iliad) either from or about one of your characters. Finally, include an appropriate picture, title (the names of your characters), and your initials in the 'Labels' section of the post.

Not sure if your sources are reliable? Check with me before using them.

Metamorphosis

I am Metamorphosis because when i was younger i used to be young and reckless and used to be really immature and really didnt care about anything in life.

Then one day i just relized everything i was doing is old and was really immature ans wasnt going to get anywere by doing them things so i grew up.

By me growing up i have cared a lot more about school and life and really care about the people that care about me.

Me and Gregor have something in common because he had to indure a lot of different things before he grew up because he turned into a cockroach and had his family turn on him and all i had to do was look in the mirror and change the things i didnt like.

DG

The fight to live

Everyday I try and live my life to the fullest and do what makes me happy beacause when you do that you never have anything to loseand everything to gain. I try to not take anything for granite either cause you don't know what you have untill its gone. I never would of thought that having to fend for yourself would be so hard so I take all I can get and appreciate what I have.

In the beginning Gregor or his family didn't respect or appreciate the thing they had and that they had a good son that supported them and Gregor didn't realize the good deed he was doing and how self-gratifying it was. I take care of me and my girlfriend and it's really gratifying to be independent.

I know how gregor feels to be stuck I am right now im having alot of relationship problems and it is really interfering with my school and the things that I need to do, everyone gets stuck in life its the people you see now that kept pushing to get out of the hole they were in.

Life and Death is the reason that the humanity exist on earth. To experience the way of life and to have a variety of choices to chose from in life. I am not a person that is down about death. To me I really don't care cause ether way. Its going to happen regardless so why stress about something that you can't control or stop it inevitable. Seizing the day I do that everyday. I try to live life to the fullest because you could die any day regardless of age, race or gender, or demeanor. So I think you should wait to the last moment of life to reminisce about what you could of did but didn't.

I think that Kafka morally leaned more toward the Death philosophy rather than life. As an adult Kafka had a miserable life. Most days he suffered from severe chronic headaches, insomnia, and tuberculosis. As a kid Kafka was in torment from his father. Kafka's father wanted Kafka to be more like him when he was younger: Strong, powerful, self assured, and self satisfied. Since Kafka was a sensitive boy this torture followed him thought his life, causing him to have an inability to find happiness through marriage.

In the story metamorphosis i think that Gregor beleived in death more than seizing the day because he lived at home with his parents and siblings supporting them for a living. When Gregor transformed into a dunn beetle roach he believed in death even more because when he was a regular person he work alot so that was all he look forward to so when he wasn't able to go back to work his family and him thought what was the use of him if he couldn't work.

The biggest stuggle in life that me and Gregor have in common is the struggle of money cause the States is in a recession so theirs a scrasity of jobs out there. also what we have in common is that me and him wants to support his family and make sure their happy.

love of a sibling .

" He must go." Cried Gregor's sister, "That's the only solution, father. You must try to get rid of the idea that this is Gregor... Just look father." pg 1143.

Gregor lived for his sister. He worked all day, to support his family and to put his sister through college. For the one person that he lived for, doesn't believe in him anymore. So why would you want to live? No one seems to care about him anymore. I wouldn't have the strength to live alone, so I see why Gregor didn't.

For me and for Gregor, my siblings are my life. If they didn't care about me anymore, or tell my grandma that "I must go." I think i would be very upset and not want to go on any longer, especially if i was in a position like Gregor. I think Gregor would never overcome this struggle because his sister is the main person he cares about, and that's lifelong. Same for me, I don't think I could ever overcome one of my siblings not caring about me anymore.

I think Franz Kafka believed in life, especially if you have a purpose. I think Kafka believed in his purpose of giving other people a bright future or the caring for other people. Like Gregor, he lived to give his sister a better life, and without her he was nothing.

Before Gregor died, I think that if his family wouldn't have hurt him or abandoned him. He would have tried to live. Especially if his sister wouldn't have said "He must go." Because she was the main person that was there for him and was trying to do things for him like feed him. Maybe if they would have found out that he was a dung beetle earlier, they could have helped him live.

Struggles in Life

Our life really depends on our views. If you are an optimistic person you will problay not think the world is doomed. We really arent doomed. The right thing to do is to just live your life to the fullest and try to see all the wonders of the world. Gregor in the beginning was not a very optimistic person. He was not a very greatful person for what he had. Now after he went through all that shit he has changed and is now more open towards caring for others and living a good life.

Franz Kafka was a very lonely angry person I think. He mad Gregor have a horrible thing happen to him. He didnt need to have that happen to him he could have relized it himself in some way.

Lifes biggest struggles are when you get stuck. You have to learn to move on and get past whatever gets in your way. If you change bodies into a cockroach then the first thing you have to do it think about why you are there and how to get out of it.

Kafka makes Gregor sound weak by saying "He is in a very slow mood he is creeping across the room very slowly". He is now in a weak position. When people are in a weak position they struggle and try to do whatever they can to get through it so they make it out. We dont learn if Gregor makes it out but if he just keeps fighting his struggles then he will be the winner in the long run.

Struggles

Gregor's quote

" Just see how thin he is

it's such a long time since he's eaten anything

the food came out again just as it went it"

That is a big struggle to go threw not being able to eat because right when it goes in comes out the same way. It would get so annoying to eat then it doesnt do anything for you so there would be no point to eat. Also what Gregor is missing is love from his family and because he has turned into a cock roach everyone is looking down at him even tho they know its him but what can you do when you are a bug.

Some of the struggles i have are not being able to eat lunch for one day and how hungry I get I couldnt imagine how hungry you would be after 3 days. Some of the things i have seen when i went to other countries are kids begging for money or anything to give them and i would just give them a few dollars or change that i have because that is some body's kid and i just feel bad but i cant help everyone and if i could i would.

I also struggle to get gas for my car sometimes and i have to bribe my parents and do work for them so then i can get some money and it is not good to be broke or have to worry how your about to get your next dollar. Some things that we could do to help is make is more civilized like putting stores up and hiring people to make money so they can spend it and after awhile i think it would eventually work dont you think?

Where is life taking you

Everything we do is in my opinion already ment to happen. We might feel like we have control of our lives but i don't think that's the case. God planned out everything that's supposed to happen in our lives. Its all planned out and crafted. So why be a existentialist? why should it matter?

Even the struggles that we have in our lives was ment to happen and cant be avoided. sometimes we can have presentiment of upcoming struggles but Its just fate. even the way you deal with them is fate. so when people beat themselves up about the way they handled a certain situation i wonder if they know it wasn't their fault. they had no control over it.

Gregor's didn't have any control of the struggles he experienced with is sister, mother and father. He didn't choose to become a roach. "Gregor was so exasperated when she began addressing him again that he ran at her, as if to attack her, although slowly and feebly enough." Gregor's greatest struggle was with his sister. He wanted to be there for her and talk to her. He just wanted everything to go back to normal again.

Even though everything we do is fate. We still have to keep in mind that there is an after life. Nobody knows where or when we're going to die. We haven't actually experienced it. we just have beliefs , some of them stronger than others. Whether you believe in life after death, reincarnation, or neither, death crosses our minds quite often.

Metamorphosis Blog Post #2: Life's Struggles

For your final Metamorphosis writing assignment, please rework your homework assignment on Existentialism into a 4-paragraph blog post about your life philosophy and struggles as it relates to Gregor's and/or Kafka's, based on your interpretation of the story. Also include a creative yet appropriate title and a corresponding picture to your post. It's ultimately up to you as to what to write each of the four paragraphs about (besides covering the two themes PLUS being about both you AND the book), but there are some ideas below:
  • Do you believe in seizing the day/living in the present? Explain why or why not.
  • Does it matter what we do with our life if we're all doomed to die? Explain your position.
  • What did Gregor seem to believe in, both before his transformation and after? Where did his beliefs stem from?
  • Based on what you know about Franz Kafka, what do you think he believed in regarding the purpose of life?
  • What is one of life's biggest struggles, both for Gregor and for you? Is this struggle something that can be overcome?
  • Consider Gregor's death - could he have done anything differently? Could his family have? Have you ever felt completely stuck like Gregor seemed to?

When I Change

“What’s happened to me”, he thought. When people transform they aren’t aware of what’s going on or why. They’ve come so far in their transformation already that they only realize it when its in full effect. I think the time in my life where i realized i changed drastically. Is when i started to care about school and actually work hard. I didnt realize when i was changing i just knew it when i did.
Gregor becoming a cockroach means that he treated himself like crap and thats what he's worth. Not only did he himself treat him like crap but so did his family. They over worked him and under appreciated him. and he let it happen
I think my real life transformation was for the better. But Gregors was not. His transformation was to get him to realize that the people he loves the most are taking advantage of him. And they're treating him like a bug.

transform

Im in a cartoon, im in a cartoon (throw it back ) im in a cartoon im in a cartoon doin spongebob on em do the ninja turtle on em going bart simpson on em ima transform on em In this song hes talking bout transforming into a cartoon like the guy transformed into a bug . He wants to be a superhero he wants to do stuff that a normal human cant do he wants to feel unstopable.

The Alteration

Many people change as they mature but most still stay the same thinking that they're sixteen through out there whole life. My uncle was one those people he hustled he banged and broke alot of laws and got away with it. One day he wasn't as lucky he was transporting illegal narcotics and he had gottened pulled over for speeding. The police searched the car and found that he had narcotics in the car he was charged with a felony and received 15 years at the age of 17. Once my uncle got out he changed his life immediatly cause he saw what it was like to be incarcerated. "I came with the intention of telling you all of this in private, but since you are wasting my time so i don't see why your parents shouldn't hear it too.'' -Mr.Samsa

Gregory has changed because he's always at work on time working hard but instead of that he stuck at home on the bed as a cock roach. Also another example of a real life transformation is the notorious gangleader Tookie Williams. He was a ruthless leader of the Crips in los Angelos, California. When he was out he was the D bo of every neighborhood until one day he had got arrested for murdering some victims of the crips. While incarcerated for life he changed his way of life and became a peaceful person that brought gangs together rather than killing each other.

Transformin Ya

I can transform ya, I can, I can transform ya Anything ya want, I can, I can get it for ya You're my baby girl, so you know I get it for ya I can trans, I can trans, I can transform ya - Chris Brown

It has to do with transformation. This is turning into a robot. Unlike our book where it is turning into a cockroach or an animal. The song makes it seem like its amazing to transform. But for Gregor it is very scary and he wants it to go away really badly. It is a huge burden for him he only wants to go to work. It just suddenly happened it what is very scary.

"He's not well" said his mother. That has to do with the story cause that makes it seem like it is really bad and he is very sick. That is true he doesn't even have his own voice to be even to tell them what is going on it is modified and sounds like hizzing.

dede the tree man .

Dede, a 35 year old man has warty roots growing from his hands and feet after he cut his knee when he was a teenager. He was let go from his job and was deserted by his wife, now alone and living in poverty Dede is raising his two teenage son's with no doctors around the help with his condition. He has HPV and cannot fight against the virus that is causing his warts to develop. To help make money to support his family he travels around Indonesia as a "circus freak". In January 2007 he had nearly 4 pounds of bark removed and has been given some hope of recovering from this disease.

"That gentle voice! ... herd them rightly" p 113.

Gregor's family describes Gregor's voice as not being human like.

In Metamorphosis Gregor wakes up to being a cockroach. I think he transformed into a cockroach because in his life he's constantly doing the right thing, listening to his family, providing for everyone and never sticking up for himself. I think he's a cockroach because he's weak and needs to do something in order for his life to change, and him transforming may be the right thing for him to do to transform his life.

My example of transformation isn't as extreme as Gregor's but it is bad. How could you live with tree like bark sprouting from your hands and feet? I couldn't. But at least you can tell that he's still human, but with Gregor he's completely a insect. Dede can still eat with his mouth and talk but Gregor has no teeth and cannot eat and many things for him are changing. Only Dede's appearance is changing and there is hope for him to become partially normal again and who knows for Gregor?

Anorexia .

People transform in many different ways. For example people who become Anorexic. People who suffer from Anorexia have an intense fear of gaining weight. They severley limit the amount of food they eat and become dangerously thin. Anorexia effects both the body and mind. It may start as dieting, but it gets out of control. All they think about is food weight and dieting all of the time. They have a distorted body image. To people around them they look way too thin, but when they look in the mirror they see a fat person.

In Metamorphisis, Gregor wakes up transformed into a cockroach. A cockroach symbolizes filth, and sneakyness. It seems to me that throughout Gregors life he has been sneaky and not very nice to people. Just focusing on his job which he doesnt even like. Anorexic people may have some simlilarity in relating with Gregor because he has transformed just as they have transformed. Gregor may have did things in his life for this to happen to him. As for the Anorexic people they do it to themselves everyday.

Metamorphosis Blog Post #1: Transformation

We have only read the beginning pages of Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and we have yet to full understand why Gregor has turned into a giant cockroach, but we have discussed how transformation can occur in our lives and what can symbolize that transformation. So in a 2-3 paragraph blog post, describe a way in which you or someone you know has transformed in their lives and compare it to A) how or why you think Gregor may be transforming based on what we know about him thus far (and include a quote!), and B) another real life example of transformation you find from researching online. It could be a news story, something in history, a song's lyrics, a movie, or a celebrity. Use your Google and your noodle. Questions to consider if stuck:
  • What does the cockroach symbolize? What does it say about Gregor's life or what's become of it?
  • Is there a time in your life where you realized you'd changed drastically? Tell the story.
  • Why do people transform? Why don't they just stay the same throughout their lives? Or do some?
  • Does your real life example's transformation seem more or less extraordinary than Gregor's? Explain.
Some places to research transformation (or change/metamorphosis) in the news, around the world, or from the past: Google News, Star Tribune, BBC, and History Channel. You may also do a "lyrics" search on Google to find a song if you choose that route. Let me know if you find an article/information elsewhere!

Oceania=America?

Many governments around the world resemble the Oceania govenment around the world in our time. Specifically ours; The American govenment is an oligarchy for a few different reasons. It can also be refered to as an aristocracy. But its classified as a " Democracy". America is a Democracy only in theory.

Why can America be called a oligarchy? Because in all actuality its ruled by the few. Its ruled by congress, judicial system and the president. What makes it a aristocracy? Although we have the right to vote only the privleged and wealthy are the only canidates left standing. the less wealthier candidates never get a fair chance. Why? because, money makes the world go round.

When the war in Iraq happened America just like Oceania instilled the thought of fear, pride and rightousness in all the citizens. In hopes to justify the war. Everyone knows Osama Bin Laden had no ties what so ever to Iraq he's not even from there. But America figured out a way to tie the two together so it can make sense to the citizens. Ten years into the present post 9/11 people are experiencing Independent thought. Protesting the war and calling for a withdraw

This blog post was inspired by a the chapter "confronting" in the book called Living Ethics.

The Hood

The Crip gang in California are really like Big Brother in the book 1984 because Big Brother has a lot of people under control and if they dont want to listen to the rules he will vaporize you or lock you up for life but the difference between the too are gangs in Cali run blocks and neighborhoods and they fight rival gangs and try to eliminate the enemy. Were Big Brother runs almost the whole country and he tryies to have people not have intimate relation ships so they dont give there time and energy to a loved one when you could give your time and energy to Big Brother.
People want to join the gang that they grew up around because they see that they have respect for eachother and have your back at all times but they also have rules and ways of doing things and if you dont abide by them they will have you killed or seriously hurt. There is nothing you can really do to try and convince a gang member to get out they have to make that decision on there own but rarley does that happen because most gangs ounce you get in you cant get out.
"they sye that 'eals all things,
they sye you can always forget,
but smiles and tears across the years
they twist my' eartstrings yet'

THE LEGAL SYSTEM

In days before mines, Many countries were ran by a strict group of people that controlled everything within the country this type of goverment is called an Oligarchy system. Over time that way of goverment was demolished in most of the countries around the world. Many say that way of life is over and far behind us but if you pay close attention some of many countries still have that type of goverment. The Oligarchy system was never demolished it still exist in many different other ways that are not harmful to their society.

The Oligarchy system even exist in the United States Of America in ways that you may know but didn't really catch on to it. Such as the U.S Goverment for example the president does not have all the power the power of presidency does not reside in the president it is distributed equally within the president and his/her chairman and cabin. The oligarchy system also play a role in the prison system. The prisons are ran by a warrtent but it is also ran by chairman around him and also correctional officers example of the Oligarchy system is just like the book 1984 cause there are many people believe that it is one person in charge but really it may be a group of people that run the organization.

oligarchy totalitarism

Governed by totalitarism politcal party of mass movement, was the Nazi political party that became the oligarchy of germany, and adolf hitler was the totalitarian leader. Totalitarian movement led by adolf hitler as head of the nazi party in germany he came to power with his good oral skills and he was the charismatic leader that germany needed and wanted at the time. Hitler and his party was the sole source of inspiration of people and a nation to vision them or "brain wash" his people that annnihilation of all enemies was the key to success to do so hitler and his party brain washed people, "alot like big brother" through multiple stupid speaches which people listened to, and strongly agreed with his beliefs because the german people did know any better they were destined to find a leader and hitler was there guy.

the jonestown massacre .

On November 18, 1978 cult leader Jim Jones and his followers died in a South American jungle called "Jonestown" in the British Guyana. The cult was founded in 1956 by Jim Jones and was called the peoples temple, it was a racially integrated church. Jones envisioned a communist community, everyone worked together for the common good. He moved the cult from California to the Guyana. The area was not big enough for all of his followers and many of them got sick. Everyone needed Jone's permission to leave his "utopia", and he didn't let them. U.S. representative went to Jonestown to see what was going on there. The next day the congressman announced he was going to take everyone back to the United States who wanted to leave Jamestown, because some were being held against their will. When the congressman left with the people, some were murdered and wounded before they got to the airport. Jone's ordered everyone to come together for a meeting, he had big kettles filled with grape Kool-Aid poisoned with cyanide and Valium. He ordered everyone to drink it and a total of 912 people died.

And oligarchical system is more dangerous than a dictator, because it's more than one person ruling the people. Under an oligarchical system like in Oceania is alot like my example of "Jonestown" because all of the people are brainwashed into thinking what the leader says is right. But like Winston and Julia they are not brainwashed like some of the people that wanted to leave "Jonestown". But in a way its different because it's only being ruled by one person and in Oceania, it's a whole goverement.

"The rocket bombs which fell daily on London were probably fired by the goverement of Oceania itself, 'just to keep the people frightened.'"-1984 (p127)

This is a way that the whole goverment brainwashed their citizens.

Smiley Face Killers .

The Smiley Face Killers are a cult of men in Minnesota. They are a powerful group of men who target male college students who have a lot going for them. They have gotten away with a lot of murders, due to no one finding out who is involved and who they are. These men must have a lot of power to do what they do, and not just one man is running this cult-there are several. Just like in the society Winston is living in. There is a higher power "Big Brother", but Big Brother has many, many people working for him which makes him even more powerful. This can be very dangerous, because if you try to rebel and take one man out of this Oligarchical government, there's always another to replace him. And with The Smiley Face Killers, if you are on of their victims, it is more than likely that hen they do find you and get you, you will not get away or have a chance of life. Another thing is the Smiley Face Killers enjoy torturing these college males. They will put them in the back seat of vans and drive around for hours and do torturous things to these men before they kill them which is usually by drowning. Just like the oligarchical government is doing to Winston and the proles. They are torturing them by taking away the life as they once knew it, and making them suffer, and when they get a chance to rebel, they kill (vaporize) them. To sum this up the Smiley Face Killers are basically an Oligarchy government just like the one that is controlling the life Winston lives.

United States Oligarchy

I think that the United States is like an oligarchy. There is one appointed leader in (Barack Obama) but yet he still has many people under him that are able to take his spot if anything were to happen. Like in New York city there is a list of only 36,000 people who can carry a gun and most of them on the list are celeberties, billionairs , and politians. The rest are filled up by citizens. But what makes it okay for those people to have the chance and the regular living people out there dont even have the chance. It is because the government is trying to make sure that its people dont fight back against there government. That is an oligarchical society where only certain people can do what they want. Most of them are high in power.

In the end this government that were in only wants us to vote for the people that they give us a chance to vote for. No regular citizen could get elected because they wont have the qualifications or arent smart enough to lead this country. The reason why this country is for sure an oligarchy is because there is only certain people who make the decisions in the end. Our government is alot like Oceania because there is one person that is saying he is making all the decisons but in the end it comes down to him and all of his other helpers to make laws and make other things happen.

1984 Blog Post #2: Oligarchy

As we have just read in Emmanuel Goldstein's book The Theory & Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism, Winston is understanding more and more how the government of Big Brother works. Your assignment: research oligarchy (doesn't have to be about government! think of other places that are controlled by a group of people) in the news or from history and write a 2-3 paragraph blog post comparing your real world example to Oceania. Your post should include a creative yet appropriate title, a picture, a link to the page (NOT Wikipedia, please) where you read about your subject, a quote from Emmanuel Goldstein's book that you can connect to in your analysis, and your initials in the 'Labels' section. Some questions to consider when typing up your post:
  • How is an oligarchical system of control even more dangerous than rule by a dictator? What is life like under this kind of rule in Oceania compared to your example from the real world?
  • Why do some people desire to become members of an oligarchy? Don't they care about the people they're ruling? Explain and consider the differences between Oceania and your real world example.
  • What is there to do for people/citizens being oppressed by an oligarchical set of leaders? Is rebellion less or more of an option? Explain, drawing conclusions between the book and your topic of choice.
Some places to research oligarchy (or controlling groups in general) in the news, around the world, or from the past: Google News, Star Tribune, BBC, and History Channel. Let me know if you find an article/information elsewhere!

Temptation

In the recent past a Muslim mother of two was convicted of murder and adultry. She was a happily married mother with two children and the wife of a great father she was like any old muslim wife she went by all the laws and muslim religion rules. One day she had gotten the temptation for another men and committed adultry with her husbands cousin. Feeling that her husband would find out she plotted to murder him. She killed him but over time she felt the guil of the murdes so she had publicly confessed to the nation. Now being tochered and is on trial to be stoned to death for her crime.

This story links together with 1984 because you have to hide your feelings and thought even in modern life. Just so that you can make everyone happy or to make sure that the higher powers don't find out. they also link together through lust of women and men also the trying to hide it and keep it a secret.

kc kids

They need more activities tokeep them out of trouble because that will lower gang and crime violance becuase alo of this young teens are hot heads tryna make a name for there selves. thats what gets the shootings and fights and drugs tryna compete to be the bigger dog . A mob of 7,900 teens swamred the streest imiateing patrons and causeing alot of distraction in KC.

winston is being brained washed and thinking big brother is watching him. these kids would go crazy they wouldnt let them brain wash them the would try and find a way to fight it. They would not settle for less they wouldnt let it happen. They are being brained wash to do bad stuff just like in the book 1984

Lifes Temptations

Temptations to change ones government has gotten people killed for years and although our times had advanced our barbaric ways have not. lebanons people are getting killed for their wants and needs of change.
Winstons want for change has led him into a sort of emotional warfare with himself "with the scarlet sash that was just tight enough to bring out the curve of her hips, the sence of his own inferiority was heavy opon him.''where he has to question his own wits. He is starting to like this julia girl but he doesen't know if he can really trust her.

Temptation

Winston's temptation to Julia is very similar to the temptation of tanning in most teens and adults with naturally fair skin. The natural bronze glow the tanning bed gives you in a short 15-20 minutes is amazing that, and it feels so good to just lay in the tanning bed on a cold winter day. The difference in the temptation to tan and Winston's temptation for Julia is that tanning is something you do, and Julia is a human being.

The temptation to tan is so hard to overcome because it makes you feel good and gives you a bronze color, but it could very well lead to a serious matter-which is skin cancer. Though Winston knows his temptations for Julia could lead him to getting in trouble with Big Brother, but he still wants to talk to her and see her whenever he can, as well as people who go tanning. They know of the serious and horrible outcome, but yet they still do it because its so tempting. Winston's temptation for Julia could lead him to getting in trouble with Big Brother, and getting vaporized, which is basically taking him off the face of the earth, as well the people who go tanning because they could eventually get skin cancer and die, which is sort of like taking them off the face of the earth also. Temptation can be okay sometimes if you are tempted to things that are good for you and will do you well in the long run.

temptation .

Winston's temptation could lead to many things, if he's not careful. His temptation could get him into a lot of trouble, the woman Julia could be setting him up. Like Winston thinks, she could be the thought police or apart of the government. He could end up being vaporized, or fall deep in love with Julia and do something crazy. Winston and Julia are doing something forbidden and if they get caught they will end up being vaporized for not following the law.

I've learned that shopping can be a everyday temptation, especially going to school inside the Mall of America. Shopping can lead to debt, in most people. Because I know most people can't afford to go shopping everyday. Shopping addiction is also known as oniomania. Compulsive buying can damage relationships, families and can put you into debt. It can lead to job loss and financial problems. One in five women have reported having some sort of shopping addiction.

In Winston's case his temptation can be linked with something good and bad. He seems to be more happier than before, he is expierencing things that he normally doesn't. But it can also be a bad thing because their actions are forbidden in their society and can get them into alot of trouble.
In my case of shopping, temptaion is a good and a bad thing. For most people shopping makes them happy and releives stress. But the bad part is that you lose lots of money and might end up more stressed than before you went shopping. It just depends on how much you do it and if you can hold back the temptation.
Temptation can be okay at times, it just depends on what the consequences are for the actions and if it will be good for you in the long run. You should be able to control the temptations also.

Temptation

"Troops and tanks lockdown the capital of this tiny gulf kingdom after riot police, swinging clubs and tear gas smashed into demonstrators."-Star Tribune.
Temptation is a hard thing to handle because doing something that you dont think is ok or your not supposed to do gets you an adrenaline rush or just gives you a good feeling. Winston wants to see this girl but he does not know if he will get caught and get in trouble and that relates to my story because these people are rioting for a new president/king and they dont even know if what they are doing is going to help or just get them into trouble. Winstons temptation can lead to him being vaporized or jail whatever the gov. feels like doing to him. The protestors can eather get killed for what there doing or go to jail. Temptation is a good and a bad thing depends on what your tempted to do. Yes temptation can be a good thing say you are tempted to do a trick snowboarding or staying after to school for work but you have to ditch some plans the outcome can be alot better.

Culture Clash

The somali culture is based on the islamic religion and is very interchangable. The roots of the culture originated from the muslim world. Therefore Its clear to see what temptations the first generation somalian youth have to face when living in a county such as America. The two cultures have completely different ways of life as do most opposing culures. The main one in my opinion is religion.

Seeing as America has an array of many different religions that people practice. Christian being the main one. Somali youth including me face tempations everyday and everywhere. From mainstream media, to the schools we attend, friends we obtain and the fashion trends. there is very little intrest in maintaning a balance between the two worlds among some. on the other hand we have the complete rejection on anything concerning "America". Even though many of the somali familes have made America their permentant home and many are U.S citizens. The connection between my story and 1984 is, although you know somethings don't specifically comply with your orders or morals sometimes you just break the rules. in order to satisfy your personal pleasure

Temptation

The temptation I am gonna talk about is the one that has recently been happening in Egypt. The Egyptian people were tempting/ threatening there leader to get out of his spot and leave there county alone. The temptation in that would be the leader Hosni Mubarak had the choice to listen to his people and leave or he could stay and keep getting paid. He decided to step down due to the threats from his people.

To connect this with the book 1984 it has to do with how Winston has the temptation to tell more people about what his government is doing to them. The egyptian people did what Winston wishes he could, do but its just so early he needs more people to be able to take on such a controling government known as " Big Brother".

•"People simply disappeared, always during the night. Your name was removed from the registers, every record of everything you had ever done was wiped out, your one-time existence was denied and then forgotten. You were abolished, annihilated: vaporized was the usual word."

1984 Blog Post #1: Temptation

As we have just seen in starting Book Two of 1984, Winston is experiencing a temptation in Julia that could theoretically be his downfall. Your assignment: research an act of temptation in the news or from history and conduct a 2-3 paragraph compare/contrast analysis between the real-life story of temptation you read about and Winston's new dilemma in 1984. Your post should include a creative yet appropriate title, a picture, a link to the page (NOT Wikipedia, please) where you read about your subject, a quote from 1984 that you can connect to your analysis, and your initials in the 'Labels' section. Some questions to consider when typing up your post:
  • What makes temptation so alluring to the average person? How is the allure different between Winston and the subject of your research?
  • Why is temptation so difficult to overcome, even when the person giving into the temptation knows it could very well lead to something terrible? Consider Winston and the subject of your research.
  • What could Winston's temptation lead to if he's not careful? What about the subject of your research? Is temptation linked with something good or bad there? Can temptation be okay sometimes?
