Disability can be one life struggle.

Gregor is experiencing life struggle as cockroach. He tries to defend himself by not gettting hurt. Many humans beings try to be strong and not be weak. For an example the adults that are disabled from walking. Somehow they try to walk. They take classes to make their legs stronger. There are also people that are deaf and some that they cant talk. Everyone tries to fight for their own lives.

"Another following immediately landed right on his back and sank in,"(pg 1135). Gregor now that he has an apple on his back he is trying to be strong. But there are times he feels very slow and useful. He tried to help his sister when his mother faint away. But what happened? He got medicine all over his face. Gregor's dad also is experiencing life struggle in a different way. He didn't have a job before gregor became a cockroach. Now that gregor has become an insect he has one now but he has stress from working a lot.

Gregor might survive this struggle since now he became an insect. But if his family give him support to help him out. If his family don't give him love he won't survive and he would go away to another place.

Rouch Problems?

You can try and kill a rouch, but they always have a way of showing up. You can trow you best exterminators at them but they still will thrive. This is just like March Madness in college basketball. Instead of Rouches there are unerdog teams like Cornell. While major teams that came in thinking that they would knock off the little teams. But like every other year there is one team that takes on the best and defeats them.

In a way this also relates to Gregor. They both have in a way transformed, Gregor into a rouch, Cornell into an elite playoff monster. Gregor parents had plan in the begining to kill him, ans so did Wisconsin and Temple for Cornell. For now both are alive... But for how long

Money

A lot of people struggle to make enough money to support their household and provide food, shelter, and other things to themselves and possibly others.

1) It can be a huge emotional strain to work long hours of a job in order to make enough money, as well as physically exhausting because of the stress, perhaps lack of sleep, and even activities done in the work place.

2) As an insect, obviously he can't work a job. As a human he chose a travling job because it had a potential to make more money that he could use to pay off his family's debt.

3) His father had been providing money, but his business failed, and now the family has to rely mainly on Gregor to earn the income.

4) Yes, most people can, with hard work and some luck involved. If you get a job, and work enough hours, it will be easier. But if you can't find a job, for whatever reason, then money continues to be a big issue. You cant really survive in this world without money.

pg.1110 "Oh god, he thought, what an exhausting job I've picked on!"

money problems

I think that everyone goes through money struggles. Everybody at one point in life has to go through money problems wether its by not having enough or being in debt. This can affect people physically, emotionally, and physchologically. Physically because they could end up working more than their body can take and it ends up affecting their body by getting sick easier always being tired not eating right because they dont have enough time to rest or eat. Emotionally because they are always being worried about not having enough money and they start to always be in a bad mood or depressed. They could be Physchologically affected because they start to think that they are always going to have the money problems and they start being more worried and paranoid. Gregor expiriences this because his parents are in debt and he has been working to pay off that debt and because of that he has become a workaholic."Im loyally bound to serve the chief, you know that very well. Besides, I have to provide for my parents and my sister. Im in great difficulties,.." I think that his sister also expiriences a problem but hers is by being worried because she cant work and she has been watching her brother work a lot. I think people can survive this struggle if they had someone help them so that they dont go through it alone and all the weight doesnt fall on just on person. It would make it easier.

Debt

"The chief clerk must be detained, soothed, persuaded, and finally won over; the whole future of Gregor and his family depended on it!" (pg.1120) When he was a human and now as a cockroach Gregor still has to try and find a way to pay off this debt that has accumulated as a result of his father's business failing. His dad also shares this same debt because it was his business that failed, but in a different way because he's real lazy so he's not really doing anything about it. Being in debt can be physical because of the all the stress, or psychological or emotional because you might always think about it.
Most people will have to go through owing a debt. If its a minor debt or a huge one just about everybody will at some point be in debt. To get a car or a house you have to take out a loan, and that's debt. But other people might be big gamblers and get into debt that way. Someone might be able to get rid of their debt after a lot of work and saving money but it would be pretty hard depending on how much you owe

Braking Bad

Gregor's life struggles are kinda the same as Walter form the t.v. show Breaking bad on AMC ( Sundays at 9) i think there are the same because Gregor really has no life he works all day than comes home and either sleeps or does his fretwork, and Walter all he did before he found out that he got cancer he just worked and helped his wife and son. I think this quote is saying that Gregor wants to keep the human inside of him alive even though the bug is taking over his mind and body. " Since he really did not know what to save first, then on the wall opposite, which was already otherwise cleared, he was struck by the picture of the lady with the fur."
I think that someone can live through the struggle even if he does not change back in to a human. All he would have to do is live outside and have his sister bring him old nasty food that they were going to throw out any ways.

Metamorphosis Blog Post: Life's Struggle

For your one and only blog post on Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, consider the second theme of the novella: Life's Struggle. Choose a struggle in particular that you think most people experience in life, including Gregor, to discuss and describe/explain the following aspects of the struggle...

1) How is this struggle psychological, emotional, AND physical?

2) How does Gregor experience this life struggle in some shape or form, either when he was human or now, as a cockroach?

3) How does at least one other family member (sister Grete, mother, or father) experience this same life struggle, but maybe in a different way?

4) Can someone/Gregor survive this struggle? Explain how.

Don't forget to include a QUOTE with PAGE # from the novella (copies are available on the computer lab's middle table) to help support one of your points above!

Also don't forget to leave your INITIALS in the 'Labels' section before you publish your post!

EXTRA CREDIT: Connect your life struggle to somebody's 1984 post (scroll through past blog posts) and leave a comment (w/ your initials) explaining the connection!

Mahatma gandhi

Gandhi is a martyr because of his non-violent ways to get the British out of India and also how he made the Indian people follow him even when they wanted to kill them for what the British did to there home land.

I can't relate Gandhi and Winston but I can relate him to a guy Winston say on page (194) the guy who looked like a skull-faced man who was sent to room 101 and he tried to fight his was out by telling the guards about the guy who just got hit in the face.

Privacy Man.

Privacy is something that should be respected, its a sensitive subject. For me when I need some privacy I'll leave my apartment if my dad's there, maybe take a walk or something. I think it's important to get privacy because you need time to sort all your emotions and thoughts out, and you can't do that as easily with a bunch of people around you. Try to think of inexorably being watched all day, you would start to go insane. Now a days there's an impedimenta of places where you're being surveilled. Gas stations, work places, streets, now even your PHONE CALLS can be listened to and recorded. There are probably even some pneumatic types of surveillance cameras that are used these days. Most often though I would say that our privacy is interrupted when phone calls are listened to.

Do YOU Believe that some privacies might need to be abolished in order to live in a more safe society?
What do you think is the most significantly invaded type of privacy?

Hitler and Big Brother the same?

One of the most famous Matyrs of all time would have to be Hitler. While his cause was not the best, he stuck to his beliefs until death. It was death of big brother, the book was sort of wrote after Hitler. If you looked at the way the countrys where run they were very simiular. They both had the main goal of world domination. They were both power hungry. If anyone got in the way they were taken out. They had a group of people that were oppresed (peroles and jewish).

What happens to you, is forever...

A martyr is when somebody dies believing their own beliefs. Winston is one of them because at the very beginning of the book he hated Big Brother in 1984. At the end he died loving Big Brother. Many people dies for many reasons or a cause. Winston wanted to die hating Big Brother but when O'Brien wanted him to feel the fear that's when he took him to room 101. "What happens to you here is forever," (pg.239). Winston become so scared and the only thing he loved was Julia. The last person he really loved was her. O'Brien had accomplished what he really wanted. That's when they let him out in the community. There are things ,your own acts, from which you could not recover.

Jesus is one of the people that dies for a good cause. He die sacrifing himself for us. Many people thinks that his death paid for our sins. Many thinks he was an evil person. When Jesus actually died he torn into two pieces the temple of roman from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks were split, ant the tombs were opened. That's when christians believe he was son of god.

rosa parks

I think maybe he decided to end the book that way to explain that you can only do so much before your time is up. To not waste time to be quick on things. Like winston when he finally thought he had the chance to do something they caught him and Julia. They could have done something against big brother but they didnt have the chance. He could have done something small with a big impact. Like Rosa Parks, she fought for what she thought was right. She refused to sit in the back of the bus. She had the right to sit anywhere she wanted she paid like everybody else did. It wasnt the biggest thing ever but it helped against racial segregation and that action started the montgomery bus boycott . If she wouldnt of have refused to move i think that maybe it would of had taken longer for everyone to be treated equally or maybe it would of never happened.

winston fell apart

In the book 1984 winston got cought for acting agiants big brother. they beat him up starved him and played mind games with him but all that stuff just didnt work on winston. so they finally brought him to room 101.

when they brought him to that room they somehow figured out his biggest fear witch happends to be big nasty mean rats. they were going to let the rats eat out his face after that he finally cracked and gave up the last of his independent thought witch was the love for his girlfriend juliea so he basicly said kill her not him so he ratted her out to save him self thats how big brother crushed him.

i think that its important that he wasnt the grat hero at the end beacuse like every book has that ending and the athour wanted to show every one that not everything has a happy ending in life.
"do it to julia ! do it to julia! not me julia! i dont care what you do to her. tear her face off strip her to the bones. not me! julia! not me!" pg. 236

Martin Luther King

While reading the book 1984 I was pretty interested, I wasn't as bored with this one as some of the other books we've read in class. The ending however was pretty disappointing. I was looking forward to Winston murdering some party members, or doing some pretty exciting stuff but unfortunately none of that happened. One of the reasons I think Orwell decided to do this is because most stories end off with a happy ending, the hero defeating the dragon or the prince saving the princess. Although I respect his choice of ending it the way he did, it was just really disappointing to see Winston die without even believing any of the things that he fought so hard to believe during the whole book. It might have been necessary for Orwell to end it that way though because that's maybe how he thought things were going to turn out. If he was writing the book as a sort of foreshadowing for what might happen to America, he's not going to make the end be all happy if he doesn't think ours will be happy either.

My understanding of a martyr is someone who's influence still influences after their death. For instance, Martin Luther King, one of the biggest civil rights leaders in history. If he hadn't died a martyr the world might not be the same place it is. A lot of people gained a lot of strength and hope through Martin Luther King and if he would have died believing that the world should be segregated people wouldn't have looked up to him the same. Another guy, Jesus. If he hadn't died a martyr we probably wouldn't have had a bunch of holy wars, deaths over religion, or Christianity at all

1984 Blog Post #3: Martyrdom (Last One!)

Either before or after you do your blog post, publish at least two detailed and insightful comments on classmates' blog posts. Answer a question that they ask or offer your opinion in response to theirs - don't forget to put your initials at the bottom of each comment!

For your final blog post on 1984, focus on the topic of martyrdom for 1-2 detailed paragraphs. Now that you've finished the book, consider why Orwell ended Winston's story on such a depressing anti-climactic note. Think about this in relation to a martyr from history that you do a little of research about online before you begin writing. Questions to possibly answer and other requirements for the blog post are below.
  • What does it mean to be a martyr? What clues before the book's ending made us think Winston might be one?
  • How did Big Brother still kill Winston without making him a martyr? Why was it important for Orwell to end the book this way?
  • What other martyrs have there been in history? Imagine/describe what the world might have been like if these figures hadn't died as martyrs. Imagine/describe what the world might have been like if these people hadn't been able to communicate their independent thought!
Other requirements for the blog post: 1) The title of the post should be the name of the martyr you researched, 2) Include a quote with page number when making a connection between your martyr and Winston, and 3) Include a link to a web site (NOT Wikipedia) where people can learn more information about the martyr you researched.
