Why does winston believe that the proles have hope fpr the future and no one else?
-because they dont get moved up to any higher class. they have nothing to win or lose.
-i think that the proles are the thught police, beacuse they dont have any thing they are lower class so they probably dont have telescreen [[chairman's shop]] and they have lost dogs that wonder, just like winston did!

A. 1. Why all of sudden is the emotion of love able to be felt by people? Does Winston feel the same way?
2. If Winston isn't afraid of dying, Why does he try to hide or Why don't he try his hardest to recruit even more people who believe in the Brotherhood?

B. 1. When you find that one who you think is really meant for you and the chemistry between one another gets better than love gets deeper and deeper. We as people have an emotional sense in our body, so we know when we feel real love or not. Well i think winston doesn't really love Julia, but he has feelings for her.

2. Maybe Winston was hiding because he don't want to get caught by the Thought Police. It will be hard to recruit others to the Brotherhood because Big Brother would know and he will try to stop Winston every move.

C. Does the Brotherhood exist or not? In class today we had many opinions about that question. Some say it don't and some say it does. Well my opinion is i think the Brotherhood does exist. Why? Winston and others have memories from the past. There are people who exist, but their not out there like Winston. If it wasn't no Brotherhood then winston wouldn't be able to know everything he knows and he would not fall in love with Julia. I believe that O'Brien was part of the Brotherhood. Thats why he been watching winston.

Why did Winston think the women outside was so beautiful?
I think that Winston thought that the the women singing outside was so beautiful because he reminded her of a real person. Someone who had her own thoughts and did as she wanted. Somebody who, no matter what happend, she still had hope and life inside her, and she sang.

Why did Winston do nothing for Julia when being beaten? Even though he said he loved her?
I believe Winston did nothing for Julia when they were being captured because there was nothing that he could do. No matter what he did or what he said, nothing would have changed. If anything fighting back would have just made things worse, and not just for him but maybe for Julia too. So in a way i think the reason he did nothing in the room was not because he was scared, but because he was protecting himself and Julia.

Why does Julia tell Winston she loves him even though she barely knows him?

I think Julia told Winston she loves him to attract his attention because she could tell he was watching her but knew he didn't know what to say or how to approach her. Saying I love you is a bit too extreme though for a society that doesn't exactly know how to love because it's forbidden by the government. I think they both feel more lust for each other than actual love. Love could begin to grow though if they spend more time together n sincerely get to know one another.

Will Big Brother be overthrown eventually?

Wilson has now become involved with the brotherhood but also kept his position within the Big Brother government. Being in that situation, a great plan to overthrow the government could evolve if Wilson deals with the right people. The society has been under such a strict government that it's going to take a lot of power to break down a society that's been brainwashed for so long.

Today in class we discussed the book that Wilson is reading in 1984. The first chapter is called ignorance is strength and talks about the past and how society used to be and what it molded in to. Before the revolution there were three classes, high, middle, and low. After the revolution it society created two classes, high and low. It seems like instead of society getting better it just worsened since there's only high and low classes which sets apart billions of people dividing the power unequally.

do you think that the book is based on what Orwell thought the world would be like if WWII had ended differently?

i think that is exactly what he was getting at. The way that the government was trying to control everyone and making it seem like Big Brother is the caring loving leader that people need to guide them is the nightmarish was that Orwell saw it happening. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

what do the girl and Winston hope to accomplish from his this secret relationship?

i think that they are trying to gain back those human feelings that they had before they were brainwashed. The sex kind of gave him an open mind that there was actual happiness outside the Party.

today we read about Winston and Julia going to meet O'brien at his house to talk about the brotherhood. After they get in his house they see that O'brien can turn offhis telescreen which amazes them. they talk about the brotherhood and discover that they are part of it and go through the normal process of being accepted. the recieve the the book which is to learn them about the way that the government is controlling society.

we talked about what "the book" was going to be about and that big brother isnt actually one person but a group of dictator that decide everything that goes on in the civilization. we also talked about why Winston heasitated to open the book, maybe because he was afraid or excited about what he had just gotten himself into. or he was worried that the perception on the government ruling the people was even worse then he imagined.

100-113

In class we talked about 'slavery is freedom' the slogan from big brother. Winston thinks the only way to be free is to be a slave. If your not a slave than you arent living. I think that statement is kind of confusing but i understand it.

Q: Does Winston have an emotional attraction to the girl or is it more physical?
A: Winston has said that since he met Julia, he has had a desire to live. He had trouble passing time and was worried about her when he didnt see her. That shows a deeper connection than just physical its also emotional. Since the beginning he liked her but he dont know what he was feeling, he didnt like what he was feeling and assumed it was hatred.

Q: Why does Winston like this girl?
A: First its the physical attraction, she is beautiful and young and he questions why she would even be interested in an old man with missing teeth like himself. He likes her because he hasnt felt what Julia has allowed him to feel for years, since his wife nearly a decade earlier. He likes that she has had sex with lots of party member because it points to corruption.

P.72-82

Q: Why is the main character able to think independently? Can others also think this way?
A: I think the main character is able to think independently because of his memory. Because of things he remembers he knows that when BB says it never happened he clearly knows it did. I think his memory and boredom with the life if 1984 is what is keeping him from being brainwashed. I beileve the others could think independently to..But they probably try their hardest not to because of the "thought police"

Q: Who & how do the thought police exist?
A: The thought police only exist in the mind. The mind weakened from lies and a life time of brainwasing since childhood. They can't really exist, they were just made up to frighten people.

Vaporized. I'm still a little confused on what they actually do when they vaporize someone in Oceania..?

My answer: Well Tyrone i really don't like this book because to me and alot of other different student i don't understand what is really going on. Who would actually write a book about the future and then also make up world that us students don't understand either. But i guess the book will get better as we get into it and i will be able to understand it better. Brettina, i would have to say that since they basically have a dictator it would would be the same government party that Hitler had hahaha.
They(Their government) has the right to vaporize people which means that they have the right to kill people and everybody else just pretend like they really wasn't there or even living and i bet that people get vaporized for really no reason. The shoes problem is kind of messed up because if they don't have enough pairs of shoes the people who did not get a pair have to walk around bare foot and who really wants to do that. It seems like they have the same type of things that we have but they are just under different names which are unfamilar to me. Its funny how people would be there with everybody else for a minute and then just vanish the next day and will not ever be seen again. When they vaporize people they have to make as if they never existed and change their whole life story around.
