Act 4, Scene 2, Emilia

Nor ever heard, nor ever did suspect. (page 193)
Othello should really believe Emilia because he is with her all the time and if she is with her shouldn't she know about all of Desdemona's where abouts. I don't think that Emilia would lie to the governor of there little island because then in the long run she will get in trouble for lying and i know she doesn't want that since Othello is into killing people for one wrong.
This quote happens in everyday life whereas the wife, husband, girlfriend or boyfriend has friends and the other spouse doesn't want to believe because they are friends and doesn't want to betray them so they lie but sometimes they do tell the truth but i think that if Emilia came to Othello like Desdemona is cheating, i think he wouldn't believe her her because it could be a lie to get her in trouble just because she is mad at her.
Cozening:
To mislead by means of a petty trick or fraud; deceive. (page 203)
* Why do you think that Othello has a trust issue but he trust the person that is untrustworthy?
* why do think that Emilia wants to help Desdemona although she is basically her boss?
MLN

Act4,Scene2, Othello

"Come, swear it. Damn thyself , lest, being like one of heaven, the devils themselves should fear to sieze thee. therefore be double damned swear thou art honest."
Othello seems angry and like desdemona has really hurt him.
It seems like when she said i am loyal he really got mad and just went off on her and it is connected to the theme as a hole because Iago has been filling his head with lies about her cheating with cassio.
Lest-for fear that.

-why dosent Othello believe what she is saying?
-why dosent Othello take what emilia said and what desdemona said and put two and two together?

" Act 4, Scene 1, Iago"

  • "No, let me know, And knowing what I am, I know what she shall be." (p. 177)
  • Iago is munipalated Othello by telling him that he knows that his wife is a fornicater. Even though she might not be, but thats what Othello going to believe because it's coming from his right hand man. Othello thinks Iago know everything.
  • This quote can be connected to "intelligence." Iago intelligence is good because he know how to munipalate people and get to their minds by having them believe him. On the other hand, its kind of bad because he is messing up someone's marriage telling lies and he can possibly get someone killed.
  • Encave: hide
  • If you had a friend like Iago, will you trust him? Explain why or why not. What do you think will happen to Iago in scene 5?

Act 4, Scene 1, Lodovico

May be the letter mover him. For, as i think, they do command him home, Deputing Cassio in his government. (Page 187, line 260)
This quote tell the reader that they want want Othello back in his home town and that Cassio the Lieutenant that Othello fired is now in charge of Cyprus. Now Cassio has the power their Othello is thinking that Desdemona is going to really be on Cassio'd team now.
This quote can be connected to alot of thing because since Othello is now leaving he has time to go though with the affair that Desdemona and Cassio is so call having.
Deputing:
Appointing Cassio as governor in Othello's place. (Page187)
* Why is Othello is mad that Desdemona is cheating? Don't you think he should be happy that he found out early in the relationship? why or why not?
* Do you think that The Duke and Senator of Venice heard about what Othello did? why or why not? and if so why do you think they would appoint him the governor of Othello's place?
MLN

Act 4, Scene 2, Desdemona

"No, as I am a Christian!
If to preserve this vessel for my lord
From any other foul unlawful touch
Be not to be a strumpet, I am none." p9 199.

Desdemona is talking about her purity. She says she has "preserved" her body only for Othello. In other words she is saying that she is not cheating and that any other touch from a man is not worth it.

Loyalty:

Desdemona has so much loyalty to Othello. It has been argued in our class that she is just with him because he has a higher rank and that she would drop him for Cassio. I disagree. Her loyalty is out of love not because she is scared of death. She can't be that scared if she would stick by his side when she sees how angry he is.

Vessel: body

Do you think Desdemona is loyal to Othello out of love or something else? Explain

How did Othello react to this quote and why did he react that way?

Act4,Scene3, Othello

"get you to bed on th' instant. I will be returned forthwith. Dismiss your attendent there. Look't be done."
Othello seems calm and yet in control over Desdemona.
This quote is connected to the larger plan because he is tellin desdemona to go and be alone and he was talkin to Iago earlier about strangaling her.

-why does Othello want Desdemona to be alone?
-what thoughts do you think are running threw his head?

Act 4, Scene 3, Desdemona

"That song tonight / Will not go from my mind. I have much to do, / But to go hang my head all at one side / And sing it like poor Barbary." (Desdemona.4.3.32-35)

Before this quote Desdemona talks about her mothers maid Barbary who died at the hands of her husband while singing this song. Desdemona obviously feels that she is going to end up like Barbary and might die at the hands of Othello tonight. She knows there's nothing she can do about his actions so she sings and prays that she will be left unharmed.

This quote can be connected to the larger themes of fury and jealousy. Desdemona knows Othello is jealous for whatever reason and this jealousy has caused him to be extremely furious with her. He's so furious that he has thoughts about killing her and Desdemona doesn't doubt that he'll actually go through with it just because of the type of person he is. He's killed people in the past so he'll most likely have no problem murdering someone now even if he's truly in love and cares for that person.

to go hang my head ~ I can barely restrain myself from hanging

what do you think will happen to Desdemona?

How do you think Emilia will feel if her friend does end up dying?

L.J.B.

act 4 scene 1 cassio

i marry what, a customer? Prithee bear some charity to my wit! do not think it so unwholesome. ha, ha, ha! -179
-cassio and iago are talking about whyy he should marry bianca, she going to ruin his name;; she a prostitute, im way to intelligent to make her a charity case. he dont think thats right.
-pride;; he know hes to good to marry her. he dont want to settle for less. !
-unwholesome;; tainted, corrupted
-does he really love her or is it all a joke to him. ! ?
-is he even going to have a chance to marry her. ?

ACT 4 SC 3

" Let husbands know their wives have sense like them. They see, and smell, ... What is it that they do when they change us for others? Is it a sport? I think it is...And have not we affections, Desire for sport, and frailty, as men have?" (p.217).

FRAILTY- A FAULT, MORAL WEAKNESS, STATE OF BEING WEAK IN HEALTH OR BODY.

Emilia sees women more equal to men then the most of the women in the play and in the time period. In this scene she talks about how a lot of women cheat and that it is okay to cheat if your husband cheats on you first. I think this is all coming out because she is in rage that Othello told Desdemona to 'let her go'. She hasn't done anything wrong. She may also feel badly about men because she is seeing Iago and he doesn't treat her well. Desdemona and Emilia talk about infidelity. Emilia says in the quote that we have no different desires that men have.

Does Emilia suspect that Othello may try to murder Desdemona tonight?

Why does Emilia talk so badly about men?

Act 4, Scene 2, Roderigo

" {Faith,} I have heard too much, and your words and performances are no kin together." (4.2.213-214)

I believe that Roderigo feels betrayed, he know longer trusts Iago to some extent. He thinks that giving Iago his jewels to give to Desdamona so that he will like him more or what not has failed, because Desdamona has not really changed her feelings or said anything towards Roderigo to make her like him more. And he is starting to realize that Iago has no clue what he is doing. I mean he just made Roderigo give up his jewels which is all he pretty much has wealth wise and Iago's plan never followed through. So Roderigo is figuring out that maybe listening to Iago is not such a great idea.

This quote can be connected through a larger theme because everyone is falling under Iago's manipulation and decite. And the one person and that is even thinking about second guessing Iago's intellegence/wrongful plans is Roderigo. I believe that he out of all the characters in this book is the one that can save everyone...If only he can figure it out and stop it in time before anything too bad occurs.

Fopped(4.2.226)-meaning cheated or decieved.

Out of all people who do you think has more of a chance of saving everyone or most everyone from Iago's manipulation?

Do you think that Roderigo will follow through with killing Desdamona? Why or Why not?

Act 3 Scene 3 Desdemona

"i'll watch him tame and talk him out of patience; his bed shall seem a school, his board a shrift; i'll intermingle everything he does with Cassio's suit. Therefore be merry, Cassio, for thy solicitor shall rather die than give thy cause away." (3.3.page 118-119)

This shows us that Desdemona is either a really loyal friend, or she has a thing for Cassio. If she didn like Cassio she probably wouldnt try to get him to stay around so badly, she was talking anout bugging Othello whenever she could just so he could get his job back. Going to that extent makes her seem like she really is having an affair with him. The theme for this is loyalty because through the whole story so far it has tested the limits of loyalty between friends ( and foes) like Iago and Othello and Cassio and Othello. Iago being on Othellos good side makes him seem disgustingly loyal to him but knowing Iago it is clear that he has some type of corruption that makes him TOO loyal.

Watch him tame means to keep him awake at night until he is agreeable ( a method of taming falcons)

why would Desdemona care so much if Cassio got fired and banished?

is it possible she is having an affair with Cassio?

Act 3, Scene 3, Iago

" I should be wise; for honest is a fool and loses that is works for."(145)

Iago is trying to make Othello double think here, by telling him one thing when us as the readers all know that Iago is in this big lie. I think that Iago is feeling as though telling Othello these things will make it so he doesn't suspect that it had anything to do with Iago.

This quote can be connected through a larger theme such as power, because that is what Iago is trying to obtain in the long run. Is the power of being Othello's Lietuanant and by doing so he created this lie which ultimatly took out Cassio, but is now taking out Othello's marriage.

"If imputation and strong circumstances"(pg. 147, 463)--i.e., a charge based on circumstantional evidence.

In this scene Othello ends up making alot of threats about Desdamona, due to his rage Do you think that he will actually follow through with those threats?

Do you think that Othello will figure out that Iago is lying about everything?

act 3, scene 4, Bianca

"O, Cassio, whence came this? This is some token from a newer friend. To the felt absence now I feel a cause," (Bianca, p.165)

Cassio was away from home for awhile and when Bianca sees the handkerchief she automatically thinks it is from a mistress. Out of jealousy she gets upset. If Iago had talked to her it would explain why she is so quick to think he cheated but if not than she just has a trust issue. When Bianca says 'to the felt absence now I feel a cause' it means she know now why he has been away for so long, he has a new lover.

Why is Bianca so quick to accuse Cassio of cheating?

What does Cassio plan on doing with the original handkerchief?

Act 3, Scene 3, Othello

"Damn her, lewd minx! O, damn her, damn her!/ Come, go with me apart. I will withdraw/ To furnish me with some swift means of death /For the fair devil. Now art thou my lieutenant."
(speaking to Iago, lines 541-545)

This quote reveals the dark side of Othello and also shows that his emotions can be easily manipulated by Iago only because he trusts him so much. This evil trance Othello has been put in is strongly motivated by jealousy which is major theme in this book. Othello is obviously not thinking clearly because he so frustrated and filled with anger, he just made two huge mistakes by making Iago second-in-command and ultimately thinking that Desdemona and Cassio have betrayed him. Those two people should be the people that he can trust the most he just doesn't realize it but eventually I think he will.

lewd minx ~ promiscuous woman

When will Othello realize that Iago is actually his enemy and not his friend?

How do you think he's going to act toward Desdemona now?

Act 2, Scene 3, Iago

"Not I, for this far island.
I do love Cassio well and would do much
To cure him of this evil-" pg. 91
This quote gives us some insight into Iago's whole personality. He makes it like there is something wrong with Cassio. It kind of seems like he is saying Cassio is the bad person. The line shows Iago's manipulative personality.
POWER:
It also is connected to what people will do for power. Iago lies to his best friend, Othello, and many other characters in the book. He wants to take everyone down just to get to the top. Power can change a person and turn them into something evil
Enfettered: enslaved.
Do you think sooner or later Iago's hunger for power will get him in trouble? explain
Who do you think Iago is more jealous of Cassio or Othello and why?

" Act 2, Scene 3, Roderigo"

  • " I do follow here in the chase, not like a hound that hunts, bu one that fills up the cry." (pg. 105)
  • Roderigo is spending all his money buying Desdemona gifts and things, basically trying to buy her out because he thinks that after all these gifts, she would hook up with him. Instead Desdemona denies him.
  • The quote i chose is connected to the theme "love." When you are interested in a certain someone, you will do whatever it takes to get that certain someone. Even if it takes buying gifts like Roderigo. I believe Roderigo did the right thing by giving up and going back to Venice. If you think about it, most females love gifts and if the gifts come from a guy they will accept them, and most likely give that guy a chance in a relationship. I guess Desdemona isn't one of them, but if you're married than you shouldn't be.
  • wit: good sense
  • Why would Roderigo let Iago talk him into going after a married women? Instead of being without no money and going back to Venice, Should Roderigo stay on the Island of Cyprus?

Act2, Scene3, Iago

"I had rather have this tongue cut from my mouth, than it shoul ddo offense to Micheal Cassio. Yet I pursuade myself to speak the truth shall nothing wrong him." pg 97

It shows how Iago is basically putting Cassio on the spot after getting him drunk, he is thinking he can control the situation and make things go his way, he is trying to cover up hius own lie. Iago lied because he has already talked bad about cassio.

Its connected in the way of how everyone is out to get everyone and how each character is jealous of everyone. they want what someone else has and they can just be happy with what they got. Iago is the bad guy out to get everyone.

Strange indignity- Unusual insult

-why hasn't anyone caught on to what Iago is doing?

-why was cassio chasing roderigo in the first place?

act 2 scene 3 cassio

"indeed she's the most fresh and delicate creature" - pg.83, line 21

- he think that Desdemona is the best thing out there, Cassio really feeling her, and he gone do what it take to get with her.

- love/jealousy
-"I'll do 't, but it dislikes me
-displeases
-does he try to go after the girl?
-why does he drink if its displeases him?
